Job Description

About Onward

Divorce is one of the most disorienting experiences a person can go through -  financially, emotionally, logistically. And yet, millions of people navigate it every year with almost no guidance.

Onward is changing that. To start, we're building technology that automates the financial disclosure process - the sworn financial statements, account linking, document gathering, and state-specific forms that every divorcing person has to produce. We're making something that's traditionally expensive, opaque, complicated, and overwhelming into something clear, manageable, and even empowering.

We're a small,pre-revenue, mission-driven team, backed by $3.5M in early funding, launching first in California and Colorado.

The Role

We're looking for a Marketing Manager to own the day-to-day execution of Onward's marketing and grow into a key voice of the brand.

This is a generalist role, which means you'll have your hands in a lot: social media, email and SMS campaigns, content, and grassroots outreach, for sure, along with participation in influencer marketing, PR, SEO/GEO/AEO, paid ad testing, community building, partnerships, and more.

You won't be doing everything right away (and we’ve got advisors to help!) but you should be excited about all of them, capable across many, and eager to act as project manager and coordinator on all.

You'll be mentored and managed by our fractional CMO and work closely with our founders, but you’ll feel ownership from week one.

What You'll Do

Right away, we’ll want you to jump in on the following responsibilities:

  1. Planning and coordination: Own the marketing calendar and keep our priorities organized. With a lot in flight and a distributed team, you'll track and measure what's happening, make sure nothing falls through the cracks, and help us stay accountable to goals and milestones.
  2. Social media: Build and run our social presence across platforms. You'll help develop our voice, create content (or work with creators to produce it), stay on top of trends, monitor comments and engagement, and grow our community.
  3. Email and SMS: Write, build, and optimize our nurture sequences and campaigns in Mailchimp as we work to turn people who’ve shown interest into Onward users and ultimately, evangelists. We have existing automations; your job is to make them better and build new ones as we grow.
  4. Content management: Help translate Onward's expertise into content people want to read, watch, or share. We have domain experts to impart their wisdom and SEO/AEO/GEO consultants to ensure it gets found. You’ll coordinate and support them all and add your own voice as we build blog posts, social copy, short-form video scripts, and more.

Over time, we hope you’ll grow to coordinate, manage and contribute to any or all of the following responsibilities:

  1. Influencer and ambassador strategy: Research and build relationships with creators, authors, attorneys, and community voices who align with our mission. Manage those relationships to ensure they are helpful to our audience and our brand.
  2. PR and earned media: Help identify and pursue grassroots PR opportunities, build relationships with journalists covering divorce, women founders, fintech, and women's finance, and help us become a go-to source for all.
  3. Referral and affiliate programs: Support our partner programs with professionals in the divorce ecosystem, e.g., financial advisors, banks, credit unions, CDFAs, real estate brokers, estate planners. Help us become the tool they recommend.
  4. Paid ad testing: Support small-scale paid experiments and eventual growth on Google and Meta. You should be comfortable reading results and have a data-driven opinion on what to try next.
  5. Community & events:  Work with our product team to build a strong, engaged Onward community. We believe deeply in the power of connection, and we know that those we help will become our biggest champions.

What We're Looking For
  1. 3+ years of marketing experience at consumer-facing startups or small businesses, or 5+ years at more established businesses, wearing various marketing hats. You’re scrappy enough to test and learn, build new playbooks, and improve processes over time.
  2. Extremely organized and communicative. You're the one who builds the shared doc, follows up, and catches problems before they go live. The team always knows where things stand because you’ve kept them on top of it all.
  3. Curiosity about this space. You should care about financial literacy and want to understand the world our customers are navigating. A personal connection to divorce or the financial complexity of major life events is a plus.
  4. Comfort with ambiguity, speed, and constructive feedback. We're a startup in launch mode, so priorities will shift. You'll need to be proactive, self-directed, and excellent at receiving and incorporating direct feedback when everything feels “on fire.”
  5. Social media fluency. You understand what makes content travel on different platforms and are excited to test and learn to see what will work best for our audience. You know when to jump on a moment while still staying authentic to our brand and voice. You are aware and on top of the others making waves in our space.
  6. Strong written communication skills. You can write a thoughtful email, a punchy social caption, and an empathetic piece of content about a hard topic, and they all feel like the same brand talking. You know how to use AI as a tool without letting it flatten your voice.

Nice to Have
  • Experience living or working in California or Colorado (our launch markets) will help your intuition about local media, community, and culture.
  • Familiarity with the divorce or legal-tech space
  • Experience with Martech tools (email, social, SEO, project management, etc.)
  • Established relationships with creators, journalists, or community builders in the women's finance, wellness, or legal-tech space
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary for early stage startups, commensurate with experience
  • Equity
  • Remote & flexible work environment
  • A small team of witty, good hearted people working to have a positive impact
  • The chance to build a mission-driven brand from the ground up
Our Culture

We're building Onward because we believe technology can take some of the pain out of one of life's hardest transitions. We're smart, driven, direct, and decent people and are determined to build a team that reflects that. No egos. High standards, high support.
