Staff Backend Engineer
Full-time / Direct Hire -unable to provide sponsorship at this time
100% Remote (US & Canada)
$175,000 – $240,000 base salary, depending on experience and location, plus meaningful equity and health benefits.

One of the teams I support is a well-funded, early-stage fintech company modernizing financial operations for a large B2B industry that has historically relied on manual, paper-based processes. Their platform is live today, handling invoicing, reconciliation, and payments between businesses and their suppliers, and they're now scaling the systems behind that volume.
Project / Role Overview:
This is a scaling-focused role rather than a 0-to-1 build. The team has a proven backend already carrying real production traffic. It needs someone who has been deep inside a complex, high-traffic system before and knows how to scale what already exists, optimize performance as usage grows, and keep things reliable when load increases. You'll be joining a small, tight-knit engineering team with a strong ownership culture, working closely with technical founders.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Staff-level backend experience with strong current hands-on Ruby on Rails work
- Time spent inside a high-traffic, complex production system at scale (not early-stage or pre-scale), with direct experience improving performance and reliability as volume grew
- Distributed systems experience: scaling infrastructure that already had real users depending on it, not building something new from a blank slate
- High ownership mindset and comfort operating with a small, engineering-first team
