Job Description

About Electric Miles

Electric Miles is scaling rapidly as a leading EV charging and energy flexibility platform. We're transitioning from startup to scale up, partnering with manufacturers, utilities, and charge point operators to connect over 100,000 energy assets over the next three years.

Our software powers smart EV charging infrastructure, from residential users managing their home charging to enterprises operating complex charge point networks. With mandates for over 200 MW of grid flexibility, we're building the digital backbone of the electric future.

We're a lean, high impact team spread across three continents, and we value resourcefulness, ownership, and the ability to thrive in ambiguity.

The Opportunity

We're hiring our product designer: a hands on, mid level Product UI/UX Designer who can operate independently, think strategically, and execute with precision.

This isn't a role with a design lead holding your hand. You'll work directly with the product lead & product owners.

The growth path is clear: deliver strong work, demonstrate leadership, and you'll evolve into our Design Lead or Design Manager as we scale.

What You'll Own

Core Products:

EM App: a mobile app for residential EV drivers, streamlining home charging, energy savings, and smart grid participation.

emPACT Platform: a back office web solution (our Charge Point Management System) for Charge Point Operators (offices, malls, apartments, restaurants) to manage fleets, billing, uptime, and customer experience.

IM App: a mobile app for commercial and residential installers, streamlining the charger commissioning process to save time and money. This product is also moving towards a partner facing white label solution, so your design work here will need to flex across brands.

Your Responsibilities

  • End to End Design Ownership: from discovery and user research to wireframes, prototypes, and developer handoff, you own the full design lifecycle.
  • Design for Complexity: take dense, data heavy energy and charging workflows (fleet management, billing, uptime, grid participation) and distil them into interfaces that feel simple and obvious. This is the core craft of the role.
  • Data Visualisation: design clear dashboards and real time data views that help operators and drivers make sense of charger status, energy usage, and grid load at a glance.
  • Product Intuition: understand our users (EV drivers, facility managers, energy operators), conduct research independently, and craft UX/UI that solves real problems.
  • Shape Requirements, Not Just Execute Them: partner early with the Technical Product Manager and Business Analysts to help define requirements and flows, rather than only translating finished PRDs into screens. You are a thought partner, not a downstream pixel pusher.
  • Design Within Real Constraints: work closely with engineering to understand what the platform, APIs, and charger hardware can actually do, so your designs are both beautiful and buildable.
  • Measure and Iterate: define how you'll judge whether a design is working, then use qualitative and quantitative feedback to improve it.
  • Design System Stewardship: maintain and evolve our Figma component library with structure, consistency, and scalability in mind, including theming that supports our white label direction.
  • Context Switching: seamlessly shift between mobile and web, consumer and enterprise, strategic and tactical work.
  • Sales Enablement: create ad hoc design assets (mockups, prototypes, pitch decks) to support our growth team in closing deals.
  • Cross Functional Collaboration: partner with Product, Engineering, and QA to ship features that users love and that scale.
  • AI Driven Design: leverage AI powered design tools to accelerate UI design, rapid prototyping, and component creation, while maintaining consistency with the design system, MUI standards, and accessibility best practices.

What You Bring

Must Haves:

  • 5+ years of professional UI/UX design experience in digital products (web and/or mobile).
  • A strong portfolio showcasing end to end design work. We want to see your process, not just pretty pixels.
  • Design systems expertise: you've built, maintained, or scaled component libraries in Figma.
  • Resourcefulness: you don't wait for instructions. You ask questions, do research, propose solutions, and take ownership.
  • Figma mastery: this is your daily tool. Bonus if you know Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, or Zeplin.
  • Excellent communication: you can articulate design decisions, give and receive feedback, and work async with a distributed team.
  • Availability: full time, exclusive role aligned to UK working hours (Monday to Friday, GMT/BST). Start within 30 days of offer.

Nice to Have

  • Experience in EV, energy, mobility, or enterprise SaaS.
  • Experience designing data heavy, dashboard, or operational enterprise interfaces.
  • Comfort with real time data visualisation, geolocation, or IoT style interfaces.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA).
  • Motion or interaction design and high fidelity prototyping skills.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, or JS (helpful for dev collaboration, but not required).
  • Experience with white label, multi brand, or themeable product design.
  • Experience mentoring junior designers.

Why Join Electric Miles?

  • High Autonomy, High Impact: you'll be designing the tools that power the energy transition. Your work will directly influence how thousands interact with EV charging infrastructure.
  • Globally Distributed, Locally Connected: work remotely with a talented, curious team, including teammates across Nigeria and Ghana.
  • Solve Real Problems: no vanity metrics or fluff. You'll tackle complex, data heavy workflows in the energy and mobility industries that genuinely matter.
