Job Description
About us
Surrey Bailiffs Ltd. is a licensed repossession and bailiff company agency in British Columbia. We're a small team with outsized ambition. Fast-growing, operationally driven, and increasingly powered by software we build ourselves. At the centre of our business is a proprietary, web-based operations platform that runs how we track files, coordinate field bailiffs, and manage the work end to end.
We've reached the point where software is no longer a side project, it's a core driver of how we scale. This is a newly defined role, and the person who fills it will shape it.
This is the only developer role in the company, and it's built for someone who wants exactly that.
You'll own our operational software: Maintaining it, improving it, and extending it as the business grows. Beyond the platform itself, you'll work directly with the people running the business to understand how the company actually operates, then find and build the automation that makes it run better. There's no backlog handed to you and no tickets to pull. You'll be expected to look at how we work, form your own view on what's worth doing, and make the case for it.
If you're a strong developer who has felt boxed in by narrow tickets and wants real ownership and visible impact across an entire business, this is that opportunity.
- Own, maintain, and improve our proprietary operations platform (a React single-page application backed by a web API and database).
- Sit down with business managers, understand the high-level picture, and translate operational needs into working software with no business analysts or product owners in between.
- Review existing workflows across the company to spot inefficiencies and design automation that removes manual, repetitive work.
- Use AI tools thoughtfully to build faster, automate intelligently, and create capabilities that weren't practical before.
- Server Management - Migrate existing platform to new server provider, manage logs, disk space, and performance
- Make independent resource and technical decisions and own the outcomes. This includes architecture, supporting software and tools, priorities, future team members, etc.
- Ship reliably and keep a production system that the business depends on every day running smoothly.

- Mid-level full stack experience. Roughly 3-6 years building and shipping real production web applications, comfortable across the frontend and backend. Solid with modern JavaScript/TypeScript and React; able to design APIs, model data, and work with databases. Knowledge in Linux server administration.
- Genuinely autonomous. You're energized, not unsettled, by being the only developer. You can prioritize your own work, unblock yourself, and deliver without someone managing the details.
- Curious about and experienced with AI tools. You actively use AI in how you build, and you're interested in where it can take the business. You treat it as a serious capability, not a novelty.
- Business-minded. You can hold a conversation with a business manager, grasp the high-level view, and connect technical decisions to what actually matters operationally and commercially. You care about why something is being built, not just how.
- A clear communicator. You can explain technical trade-offs in plain language and bring non-technical leadership along with you.
- Pragmatic and outcome-driven. You ship things that work and create value, and you know when "good enough and live" beats "perfect and delayed."
- Experience building or maintaining internal/operational tools rather than consumer products.
- Background working in a small business or startup where you wore multiple hats.
- Exposure to workflow automation, integrations, or process tooling.
- Familiarity with the kind of compliance common in legal, financial, or regulated industries.

- Total ownership. This is your software and your domain, not a slice of someone else's roadmap.
- Real impact, visible fast. What you build is used by the business immediately, and you'll see the difference it makes.
- A seat at the table. You'll work directly with leadership and have a genuine voice in where the company's expansion leads and the technology that supports it.
- Room to grow with us. We're ambitious and growing quickly. The person who builds the foundation has the chance to grow into far more.
- Full-time and fully remote - work from wherever you do your best work.
- Independent, self-directed environment with direct access to business leadership.
- Salary based on experienceÂ
