Job Description



Director of Marketing


  • Location: Hybrid - Remote/Woodside
  • Work Model: Onsite 4 days per week at HQ for Bay Area–based employees. For those outside the Bay Area, onsite one week to two weeks per month

Our mission is to increase imagination through products that enrich, educate, and entertain kids. We are a small, high-performing team, and every hire has a major impact on the product. We are currently under 5 full-time employees and work with more than 25 consultants for various creative projects and sprints.


Role Overview


We are looking for a strong, steady leader who can build and scale Curio’s marketing function while staying nimble, resourceful, and disciplined with budget and execution. This is a hands on builder role for someone who has seen what works and what fails across consumer brands, and emerging technology companies. This role goes beyond traditional consumer marketing. You will help shape how families, educators, media, and policymakers understand AI-powered toys and the future of safe and trusted childhood technology. You must be someone who can balance brand magic and consumer excitement with thoughtful communication around trust, safety, education, and emerging policy conversations. The ideal candidate stays ahead of cultural shifts, marketing trends, platform evolution, and consumer behavior while maintaining strong instincts around brand trust, storytelling, and long-term reputation building. They are continuously learning and deeply plugged into the evolving marketing landscape.


We are not looking for someone who delegates from a distance or depends on internal teams. You will be our first internal marketing hire. We need a leader who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves, building systems from scratch, and personally driving projects forward in a fast-moving startup environment.


Responsibilities


  • Own and evolve Curio’s marketing strategy, creative direction, and brand identity in collaboration with our two founders
  • Create partnerships, community engagement, experiential activations, influencer collaborations, campaigns, and media opportunities
  • Build consumer awareness while thoughtfully navigating conversations around AI, child safety, education, and emerging policy concerns
  • Monitor cultural conversations, market trends, policy developments, and consumer sentiment in real time
  • Develop messaging frameworks tailored to parents, educators, policy leaders, media, creators, and strategic partners
  • Ensure consistency across product, packaging, website, social media, partnerships, and brand experiences


Qualifications


  • 5–10+ years of experience in marketing, brand strategy, creative direction, or consumer storytelling
  • Deep understanding of the foundational building blocks of marketing within an early-stage startup environment, including brand positioning, audience segmentation, channel strategy, top-of-funnel awareness, customer acquisition, retention, lifecycle marketing, partnerships, PR, community-building, and go-to-market execution
  • Strong critical thinking and business judgment, with the ability to evaluate measurable business outcomes and consumer sentiment
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative marketing instincts with the ability to think both analytically and creatively
  • Proven ability to use data, consumer insights, testing, performance metrics, and market signals to drive strategic decision-making
  • Pattern recognition from prior experience across successful and unsuccessful marketing strategies, with strong instincts for avoiding decisions that negatively impact brand credibility


Compensation


  • Salary: $150k-$220k per year
