Embedded Systems & R&D Engineer (Unmanned Systems / Defense Technology Sector)

Location: Netherlands (relocation required)


We are currently looking for an Embedded Systems & R&D Engineer to join a high-tech organization operating in the defense and security technology sector. The company develops advanced solutions to support safety, operational effectiveness, and mission-critical performance for armed forces, first responders, and security organizations.

The work is focused on the development of unmanned and remote-controlled systems, including drones and other advanced technical equipment used in complex operational environments. The role covers the full development lifecycle, from concept and prototyping to testing and integration of final systems.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary R&D environment, working closely with hardware and software engineers to develop reliable embedded systems and ensure seamless system integration.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain embedded software using C/C++ (Python is a plus)
  • Work with microcontrollers and embedded hardware at system level
  • Integrate, test, and debug combined hardware and software systems
  • Participate in R&D activities, prototype development, and system improvements
  • Support technical analysis, troubleshooting, and problem-solving
  • Document technical designs, test procedures, and engineering solutions
  • Conduct hands-on testing and validation in lab or R&D environments


Candidate Profile

  • BSc or MSc in Embedded Systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Experience in embedded software development using C/C++
  • Basic understanding of electronics and hardware–software interaction
  • Strong analytical mindset with a structured and solution-oriented approach
  • Genuine interest in high-tech systems, drones, or defense-related technologies
  • Proficient in English (Dutch is a plus)
  • Proactive attitude and motivation to work in a fast-moving R&D environment


Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of communication protocols (SPI, I²C, CAN, UART)
  • Experience in laboratory testing or R&D environments
  • Interest in system integration, robotics, or mechatronics
