- This role is fully remote and available globally.
Robust Open Online Safety Tools (ROOST) is seeking an Infrastructure Engineer to join our team in building open source safety infrastructure. As a member of our team you will contribute to designing, implementing, and optimizing large scale open source safety systems. Note - This posting is for multiple levels, both Infrastructure Engineer and Senior Infrastructure Engineer. Level will be determined in the interview process.
Robust Open Online Safety Tools (ROOST) is seeking Infrastructure Engineers to join our team in building the safety infrastructure for the AI powered internet. As a member of our team you will design, implement, and optimize open source distributed systems for online safety, like high-throughput rules engines, review platforms, and ML systems for classifier training and evaluations. You will work closely with ROOST’s team members including our growing engineering team, our Technical Design Committee, and the open source community of contributors.
What We're Building
ROOST is creating foundational infrastructure for a trust and safety workflow. This is the infrastructure that enables an organization to detect policy-violating content or behavior, then route, review, enforce, and log that content and or behavior. This is a system that’s heavy on data ingestion and processing, enforcing user-defined rules, and must be performant at scale. Our current tools include Osprey, a high performance rules engine that processes user defined rules in real-time and Coop, our review platform for detailed reviews with a comprehensive suite of child safety features. We know that AI is creating new challenges and opportunities for online safety; we are building tools that are resilient and relevant to these challenges. ROOST’s roadmap is publicly available. The roadmap is a living document, and is continuously informed by our Technical Design Committee, our on-staff expertise, and user community.
Key Responsibilities
Drive and evolve ROOST’s open source safety tools
- Design, build, and maintain the infrastructure components of Osprey, Coop and future ROOST projects including agentic assist and ML system integrations
- Make choices regarding pipelines, storage systems, query layers so that the systems are performant and yet widely usable because of their interoperability with user tech stacks
- Own readiness of ROOST projects for scaling across containerized services (docker, kubernetes) so that ROOST projects can be deployed by organizations ranging from small startups to large platforms
- Own and implement best practices for ROOST’s upstream builds and releases, including system health checks across CI/CD, observability, and logging. Understand and document failure modes.
- Ensure ROOST projects have strong security practices across the development platform (eg GitHub), in their handling of dependencies and release packaging, and strong code security
- Lead decision analysis and drive consensus amongst stakeholders when faced with complex architecture decisions, balancing speed, features, simplicity, and performance
- Participate in an engineering culture of high quality execution and teamwork. This includes participating in system design and milestone planning; instilling code quality, rigor, testing, and monitoring; and ensuring quality developer experiences through documentation.
