Job Description


As a Lead Network Engineer with American Family Insurance, you will transform our data systems and architecture to support greater variety, volume, and velocity of data and data sources. Extract data from a variety of sources and find ways to connect them and make them suitable for use in software systems and for the development of models and algorithms.

We are currently looking for 2 Lead Network Engineers to join our team.

You will report to the Senior Manager, Technical Services.

If located within 50 miles of one of our core locations (35 miles in Boston), you will be expected to work a minimum of 10 days per month from one of the following office locations: Madison, WI 53783; Boston, MA 02110.

We are also open to hiring a remote candidate in Dallas, TX or Ashburn, VA.

Position Compensation Range

$131,000.00 - $220,000.00

Compensation may vary based on the job level and your geographic work location. Relocation support is offered for eligible candidates.

Primary Accountabilities

  • Network Design and Implementation: Leading the design, planning, and implementation of network solutions to meet organizational needs. This includes evaluating current systems and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Network Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Overseeing the maintenance of network systems and ensuring their optimal performance. This involves diagnosing and resolving network issues promptly to minimize downtime.
  • Security Management: Implementing and managing network security measures to protect data and systems from unauthorized access or attacks.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintaining detailed documentation of network configurations, changes, and performance metrics. Providing regular reports to management on network status and performance.
  • Vendor Management: Coordinating with external vendors and service providers to ensure the procurement and maintenance of network equipment and services.
  • Continuous Improvement: Staying updated with the latest network technologies and trends to continuously improve network infrastructure and processes.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of application development methodologies (e.g. Agile) and product-based teams.
  • Demonstrated knowledge & understanding of key Cloud services (EC2, S3, Cloud Watch, Containers).
  • Demonstrated experience with System Administration (configuration, installations, patch management, server maintenance, and Network Management (firewalls, proxies, IP management, routing, DNS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of multiple IT subject areas (e.g. development, testing, configuration, deployment, monitoring).
  • Demonstrated experience building automation for cloud environments using tools such as CloudFormation, Terraform & Ansible.
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: Java, Python, Linux, Shell, Bash or other programming languages.
  • Demonstrated experience with continuous integration tools such as Jenkins, BitBucket, or Gitlab.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing, using and supporting integration and communication protocols between applications, databases, and technology platforms.

Preferred Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of network topologies, protocols, and technologies such as LAN, WAN, VPN.
  • Demonstrated ability to design Cisco SD-WAN solutions across multiple sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to design Cisco Meraki and WiFi networks.
  • Demonstrated ability to design Cisco ACI environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to configure and manage routers, including setting up routing protocols, access control lists (ACLs), and network interfaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and configure Infoblox DNS, DHCP, and IP Address Management (DDI) solutions for efficient network operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to use Python for automating network tasks and scripts for configuration management.
  • Expertise in using Ansible and Terraform to automate network device configuration, manage strategies, and ensure deployment across network environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based networking services such as AWS VPC, Azure Virtual Network, and Google Cloud VPC.
  • Demonstrated ability to use GitLab's features for collaborative development, including CI/CD pipelines, issue tracking, and project management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of application development methodologies (e.g. Agile) and product-based teams.
