About The Role

We are seeking a skilled Fullstack Engineer specializing in child safety tools and systems to join our Intelligence & Investigations team. This remote role, based in the US, involves building and maintaining data-intensive, AI-powered applications and infrastructure aimed at detecting, analyzing, and disrupting abuse across OpenAI’s platforms. As a key member of the team, you will collaborate closely with operators, investigators, and cross-functional groups such as Product Policy, Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, and Research to develop reliable, scalable, and user-centric safety tools. Your work will directly contribute to safeguarding users by enabling high-severity safety investigations and interventions. This position requires a proactive problem-solver comfortable working in ambiguous, fast-paced environments, with a strong understanding of sensitive content handling and safety protocols. The role offers a hybrid work model with three days in the office per week and relocation assistance for new employees.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript
  • Experience with large-scale data pipelines, search, and retrieval systems
  • Knowledge of tools such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, data warehouses, and SQL
  • Strong software engineering foundation with experience owning end-to-end systems
  • Familiarity with AI model integration and API utilization
  • Product-minded approach to design and development
  • Experience working with high-severity harms or safety-critical systems
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity and solve complex, open-ended problems
  • Understanding of operational workflows and investigative processes
  • Prior experience with content moderation, safety systems, or child safety challenges (preferred)
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Prototype, develop, and maintain intelligence systems for detecting and triaging high-severity harms
  • Collaborate with operators and investigators to design systems that enhance efficiency, accuracy, and safety
  • Build and improve across the full technology stack, including user interfaces, backend services, and data pipelines
  • Integrate new AI models and APIs into safety tools to improve detection and response capabilities
  • Engage with cross-functional teams to align on safety policies, system requirements, and technical strategies
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on the impact of safety systems using data-driven approaches
  • Contribute to the technical strategy and roadmap for child safety tools and systems
  • Ensure secure handling of sensitive and egregious content, including quarantine processes and reporting to authorities such as NCMEC
  • Stay informed about emerging challenges in child safety and safety-critical AI applications
