Job Description
Experienced Lifecycle Assessment (LCA) Scientist
Hi! We are Chemploy!
Welcome to Chemploy, where the intersection of engineering, passion for sustainability, and good coffee defines our vibrant workplace culture! More than just a company, we're a team of dedicated engineers, technicians, and visionaries committed to making a positive impact on the world.
With a diverse focus on Sustainability, Circular Economy, Chemistry, and beyond, Chemploy is not your average workplace. Our mission is straightforward – "to be the best employer". We take pride in fostering an environment that's both unconventional and down-to-earth, where creativity thrives and innovation knows no bounds.
As specialists in Chemicals, Food and Beverage, Life Sciences, and High-tech, we're on a journey to contribute to a better, more sustainable, and friendly world (starting with ourselves ;) If you're tired of the traditional engineer stereotype and seek a workplace that encourages out-of-the-box thinking after you looked in-the-box, Chemploy is the place for you.
Especially if you are an Experienced LCA Scientist
What is the job about?
TNO's Energy & Materials Transition (EMT) team seeks an experienced LCA scientist to contribute to groundbreaking research on circularity and sustainability impacts across various technologies and economic sectors. You will work on projects involving novel chemicals, renewable energy, electronics, and waste management, guiding value chain actors towards a sustainable circular economy.
As part of the Sustainable Value Chains team, you'll model and assess entire value chains using advanced methods like Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Life Cycle Costing (LCC), and Technoeconomic Analysis (TEA); there’s also Social LCA, and even Socially/Environmentally Extended Economic Input/Output (EIO). Your work will be complemented by scenario analysis, predictive modelling, and multicriteria analysis to provide insightful recommendations and decision support.
So… Whom are we looking for?
Are you passionate and eager to tackle sustainability challenges and work with complex LCA models. While an understanding of chemical and process engineering principles is beneficial, the ability to systematically and methodically assess sustainability is key. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, contributing to national and international research programs.
If you're driven by solving societally relevant sustainability problems and enjoy asking critical questions, this role offers the perfect opportunity to make a significant impact. Join us in advancing sustainable practices and shaping a more sustainable future.
Are you more of a list-type? We expect you to bring these ‘hard skills’:
- MSc and preferably PhD in Engineering, Industrial Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Materials Sciences, or related scientific fields;
- Demonstrable publication record in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
- 4 years experience or more (in addition to PhD work)
- Experience performing LCA studies using software like SimaPro, OpenLCA and Brightway;
- Experience with coding in Python (some experience with Machine Learning is a plus)
- Affinity for large data sets, modelling and visualization of data;
- Good knowledge of at least one of the relevant technologies & economic sectors:
- Novel chemicals & materials including fuels and plastics,
- Electronics & consumer goods,
- Renewable energy and battery storage systems,
- Building & infrastructure,
- Waste management.
And these ‘soft skills’:
- Ability to work independently, to critically assess your own results;
- Experience managing junior researchers (e.g., PhD students), and ability to mentor and cooperate within a wider research team;
- Good communication, reporting and presentation skills;
- Languages: Excellent oral & written skills in English. Command of Dutch is highly preferred (if not: we offer a bespoke language training).
