The Role

We’re looking for a Senior Scala Software Engineer with deep expertise in backend and application development to help design, build and evolve highly scalable, resilient software systems for our client in. You’ll work across the full engineering lifecycle — from architecture and technical design through to development, testing, deployment and production support. You’ll also play an important role in shaping technical direction, raising engineering standards and supporting the development of other engineers.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build and maintain scalable, performant and resilient backend systems supporting critical business needs.
• Develop high-quality applications using Scala and modern functional programming principles.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, designers and other stakeholders to deliver effective technical solutions.
• Contribute to system architecture and design decisions, influencing the technical direction of products and platforms.
• Design and develop robust APIs, integrations and distributed services.
• Drive software quality through code reviews, automated testing, continuous integration and engineering best practices.
• Investigate and resolve complex technical issues in production environments.
• Write and review technical design documents, RFCs and root-cause analyses.
• Contribute to engineering standards, operational practices and architectural principles across teams.
• Mentor and support other engineers through knowledge sharing, technical guidance and collaborative problem-solving.
• Continuously develop your technical expertise and contribute to a positive, inclusive engineering culture.

• Participate in an on-call rotation, ensuring reliable and timely resolution of production incidents.

What You’ll Need

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with Scala, ideally using the Typelevel ecosystem, including technologies such as Cats, Cats Effect, http4s, FS2 and Circe, ZIO or similar.
• Strong understanding of functional programming, including referential transparency, strong typing and composable design.
• Experience building concurrent applications using modern functional effect systems or similar abstractions.
• Proven experience designing, developing and operating complex distributed systems in a modern cloud environment.
• Strong knowledge of REST API design, scalability, fault tolerance and performance optimisation.
• Experience working with production infrastructure, observability and incident management.
• Experience with microservice architectures and Kubernetes.
• Strong understanding of software engineering best practices and architectural principles.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership of projects and deliver them end-to-end.

Relevant Alternative Backgrounds

We’re also interested in engineers who have strong professional experience with Haskell, PureScript or another language/ecosystem built around a modern functional effect system, and who are interested in transitioning into Scala and the Typelevel ecosystem.
