About us: Connected Dealer Services is an innovative technology company offering cloud-based solutions tailored for modern car dealerships across the US. We provide auto dealers with specialized tools to manage their inventory effectively, safeguard assets, reduce costs, enhance service retention, and add value at the point of sale. With our team's expertise in wireless technology and in-depth understanding of new car dealership needs, we've crafted a system that facilitates efficient and informed operational decisions.
Job Summary: We're hiring an intermediate backend developer to work primarily in Ruby on Rails. You'll take well-scoped features from ticket to production (requirements, implementation, tests, deployment) with code review and support from senior developers on the team. You'll also spend real time investigating bugs and performance issues and proposing the fix, rather than only implementing one you've been handed.
Because our platform holds dealer business data and consumer PII, security is part of the daily job here rather than a separate checklist.
Work Location: This position is based in Western Canada (BC, AB, SK) and is 100% remote. While the role does not require regular travel, occasional travel (2-4 trips per year) may be required for team meetings or business needs. A quiet, distraction-free workspace is required for successful remote work.
What You’ll Actually Work On
- Ingest millions of events per day from devices in the field, while ensuring the data is reliably stored and able to be power the rest of our services
- Integrate with a variety of internal and external partners to both push and pull data as needed to support our core workflows
- Participate in ensuring our tech stack has the latest features / security patches. A recent example is a rails upgrade from 7 -> 8
- Find new ways to leverage exiting data, or add new data, to bolster our product offering
Our Stack
This is what we run. The requirements section below covers what we expect you to bring on day one.
- Ruby on Rails 8.1 on Ruby 4.0, monolith application with external and internal integrations
- PostgreSQL 17.9, with Redis and Sidekiq for background processing
- RSpec for automated testing
- AWS, including S3 for file management, RDS for the databases, SES for email, plus monitoring tools such as cloudwatch
- Kubernetes today, migrating to ECS. This is active work you'd take part in, not legacy that someone else handles.
- GitHub Actions for CI/CD, JIRA for issue tracking
What You’ll Do
- Deliver features and bug fixes end to end, from requirements through testing and deployment
- Write efficient, reusable, reliable code, and keep it that way as the codebase grows
- Investigate bugs and performance issues, propose solutions, and implement them
- Build and consume RESTful APIs
- Write automated tests for what you ship, and manually verify your work before handing it off
- Collaborate with front-end developers to connect user-facing elements to server-side logic
- Work with internal and third-party teams to clarify requirements and support delivery
- Give and receive code review, and contribute to team knowledge sharing
- Take part in sprint planning, standups, and retros
