About us: Connected Dealer Services is an innovative technology company offering cloud-based solutions tailored for modern car dealerships across the US. We provide auto dealers with specialized tools to manage their inventory effectively, safeguard assets, reduce costs, enhance service retention, and add value at the point of sale. With our team's expertise in wireless technology and in-depth understanding of new car dealership needs, we've crafted a system that facilitates efficient and informed operational decisions.

Job Summary: We're hiring an intermediate backend developer to work primarily in Ruby on Rails. You'll take well-scoped features from ticket to production (requirements, implementation, tests, deployment) with code review and support from senior developers on the team. You'll also spend real time investigating bugs and performance issues and proposing the fix, rather than only implementing one you've been handed.

Because our platform holds dealer business data and consumer PII, security is part of the daily job here rather than a separate checklist.

Work Location: This position is based in Western Canada (BC, AB, SK) and is 100% remote. While the role does not require regular travel, occasional travel (2-4 trips per year) may be required for team meetings or business needs. A quiet, distraction-free workspace is required for successful remote work.

What You’ll Actually Work On

  • Ingest millions of events per day from devices in the field, while ensuring the data is reliably stored and able to be power the rest of our services
  • Integrate with a variety of internal and external partners to both push and pull data as needed to support our core workflows
  • Participate in ensuring our tech stack has the latest features / security patches. A recent example is a rails upgrade from 7 -> 8
  • Find new ways to leverage exiting data, or add new data, to bolster our product offering

Our Stack

This is what we run. The requirements section below covers what we expect you to bring on day one.

  • Ruby on Rails 8.1 on Ruby 4.0, monolith application with external and internal integrations
  • PostgreSQL 17.9, with Redis and Sidekiq for background processing
  • RSpec for automated testing
  • AWS, including S3 for file management, RDS for the databases, SES for email, plus monitoring tools such as cloudwatch
  • Kubernetes today, migrating to ECS. This is active work you'd take part in, not legacy that someone else handles.
  • GitHub Actions for CI/CD, JIRA for issue tracking

What You’ll Do

  • Deliver features and bug fixes end to end, from requirements through testing and deployment
  • Write efficient, reusable, reliable code, and keep it that way as the codebase grows
  • Investigate bugs and performance issues, propose solutions, and implement them
  • Build and consume RESTful APIs
  • Write automated tests for what you ship, and manually verify your work before handing it off
  • Collaborate with front-end developers to connect user-facing elements to server-side logic
  • Work with internal and third-party teams to clarify requirements and support delivery
  • Give and receive code review, and contribute to team knowledge sharing
  • Take part in sprint planning, standups, and retros

What You’ll Bring

Core Requirements

  • 3 to 5 years of professional software development experience, with at least 2 to 3 years hands-on in Ruby on Rails
  • Solid working understanding of the Rails framework and Ruby idioms
  • Experience on a recent Rails version, 7.2 or newer. If you're a version or two behind, we'll get you current
  • Proficiency in SQL, including writing migrations and reading query plans
  • Hands-on experience designing, building, and consuming RESTful APIs, including token-based authentication
  • Experience with automated testing in RSpec or a comparable framework
  • Working knowledge of secure coding practices for common Rails vulnerabilities, including SQL injection, XSS, and CSRF
  • Experience working within authentication and authorization systems such as Devise and Pundit
  • Proficiency in Git
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and a willingness to dig into unfamiliar code

Also Important

  • Working knowledge of background job processing and queue management
  • Comfortable with cloud object storage and general familiarity with AWS tooling
  • Exposure to database design and query optimization
  • Familiarity with handling PII safely, plus awareness of data encryption, secrets management, and privacy standards such as SOC 2 and GDPR
  • Familiarity with Docker
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and what a healthy one looks like
  • Awareness of what's involved in upgrading a Rails application across major versions
  • Familiarity with Rails community conventions and the common gem ecosystem

Nice To Have

  • Exposure to Kubernetes or ECS, especially if you've been through a migration between them
  • Exposure to SOAP protocols, since we still integrate with a few
  • Experience writing and maintaining API documentation, particularly with Swagger
  • Working knowledge of front-end frameworks and integration

How You Work

  • Clear communicator across cross-functional teams, able to explain a technical tradeoff to someone who isn't an engineer
  • Comfortable in an agile team: you ask questions, seek feedback, and act on review comments
  • Good analytical and organizational habits, with a bias toward continuous improvement
  • You use AI coding tools in your workflow, with judgment about when to trust the output and when to verify it

Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience. We care more about what you've built than where you studied.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit for extended periods.
  • Repetitive motion is required for computer entry.

A comprehensive Benefits package is included

Salary - $90,000 - $115,000 CAD/annually
