FUSE ONCOLOGY, INC.

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) — QA Lead

Quality Engineering | Full-Time | Remote (Continental U.S. — lower 48)

Location: Remote — continental U.S. (lower 48) only    Reports to: Engineering Manager / Software Architect

Team: Founding QA hire — first dedicated tester on our product engineering team

About Fuse Oncology

Fuse Oncology, Inc. is a health technology company reimagining radiation oncology. Headquartered in Boone, North Carolina, we build a modern, AI-driven software suite that streamlines every step of the radiation oncology workflow — from consult documentation to treatment planning to care tracking and authorization — so clinicians can spend less time fighting their tools and more time caring for patients.

Our mission is urgent. Cancer patients expect treatment within 24 hours of their consult, yet today it often takes three to four weeks to move from consult to first treatment. Fuse is on a mission to close that gap — enabling providers to move from consult to treatment in just 24 hours and accelerating care to move at the speed of the patient.

Because our platform handles protected health information (PHI) in live clinical workflows, every release we ship must meet a high bar for reliability, data integrity, and HIPAA-aligned data handling. We are a fast-moving startup where this role carries real ownership and direct impact on the tools radiation oncology providers depend on every day.

The Opportunity

We are hiring a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) to build and lead the quality engineering practice at Fuse. This is deliberately an SDET role, not a manual-QA role: we want an engineer who writes code to test software — building automated test suites, harnesses, and CI-integrated checks — not only someone with a strong eye for finding defects (though we want that too).

As a QA engineer, you will own how quality gets defined, measured, and enforced across the platform. You will help set the testing strategy, choose and stand up the tooling, and have the runway to grow this into a team as the company continues to scale.

U.S.-Based Role

Testing our software regularly involves working with real or realistic PHI in QA and staging environments. To keep that data handling tightly controlled and firmly within our HIPAA-aligned compliance posture, all work for this position is performed onshore. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and must be located in the continental United States (the lower 48 states).

What You'll Do

•   AI First – Utilize AI tools (Claude, Codex, GPT, etc.) to maximize throughput and customize the testing strategy to fit Fuse’s unique footprint.

•   Own the testing strategy across the platform — work with dev lead and engineering manager to define what “done and tested” means and establish quality gates the whole team builds against.

•   Design and build automated end-to-end and system integration test suites using AI and custom code, not just click-through test scripts.

•   Build and maintain test data management and environments that let us exercise realistic clinical workflows while protecting PHI and staying inside our HIPAA-aligned controls.

•   Lead performance, load, and reliability testing for workflows where uptime and data integrity are non-negotiable.

•   Partner closely with our developers, engineering manager, architect and PO — reviewing designs for testability and embedding quality early, not at the end.

•   Own defect tracking, root-cause analysis, and release-readiness reporting, and be the person who can say with evidence whether a release is safe to ship.

•   Grow the QA function over time, including mentoring the dev team on QA practices.

What We're Looking ForCore (required)

•   AI Experience – Direct experience using AI to write code, test code, and build automated testing workflows.

•   Significant experience as a Software Development Engineer in Test, QA Automation Engineer, or a developer who owns test automation — with a track record of building test frameworks from the ground up.

•   Strong skill in at least one modern UI automation framework — Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium — plus familiarity with system integration, and API testing tools.

•   Hands-on experience building automated tests against modern web applications, including React front ends and REST/API back ends.

•   Familiarity with performance and load testing tools (e.g., k6, JMeter).

•   Experience with automated test execution in CI/CD workflows, including how tests run, report results, fail builds, and support release quality gates.

•   Working knowledge of test management tools such as Qase, TestRail, or similar platforms for organizing test cases, tracking execution, and supporting release readiness.

•   Legal authorization to work in the United States, and located in the continental U.S. (lower 48 states); all work performed onshore.

Strongly preferred

•   Experience working with PHI, HIPAA, or in a regulated healthcare/health-IT environment.

•   History of organizing a QA practice and working with a team.

•   Understanding of secure test-data practices — data masking, synthetic data generation, and environment segregation.

•   Startup mindset — comfortable with changing priorities and ability to adapt in a fast past environment

Why Fuse

•   Real mission — your work directly affects the reliability of software used in oncology care and helps physicians treat patients sooner.

•   Flexibility — fully remote within the U.S., with a small, senior team that values engineering rigor.

•   Growth — clear runway to build your skills and develop as the company grows.

How to Apply

Please submit your resume along with a short note or portfolio describing a test framework or automation suite you built and the impact it had.
