The Principal Autonomous Systems Safety Engineer will lead safety strategy, validation frameworks, and risk management initiatives for next-generation autonomous platforms.

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across robotics, embedded systems, machine learning, computer vision, and software engineering.

The role requires a balance of deep technical expertise, systems thinking, and creative problem-solving in a fast-paced innovation environment.

You will help define how autonomous solutions are tested, validated, and trusted in real-world operating conditions.

Accountabilities

The Principal Autonomous Systems Safety Engineer will lead the development and execution of safety frameworks for autonomous robotics systems, ensuring engineering teams have the requirements, processes, and validation strategies needed to deliver safe and reliable solutions.

  • Define and implement safety frameworks for autonomous systems, including end-to-end robotics solutions and emerging autonomy platforms.
  • Derive technical safety requirements and provide clear execution paths for engineering teams using appropriate safety engineering methodologies.
  • Architect robust validation and verification (V&V) frameworks to evaluate autonomous system performance and reliability.
  • Conduct risk assessments, safety reviews, and hazard analyses to support feature development and system design decisions.
  • Apply safety engineering principles to complex autonomous vehicle scenarios and evolving technical challenges.
  • Partner with engineering teams across embedded software, systems, machine learning, computer vision, testing, and robotics to drive safety initiatives.
  • Collaborate with data infrastructure teams to define tools, metrics, and data strategies for monitoring real-world fleet performance.
  • Support the development of scalable safety processes that enable autonomous technology deployment.
  • Communicate safety findings, requirements, and recommendations clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of safety practices within a fast-moving robotics environment.

Requirements

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced systems safety engineer with expertise in autonomous technologies, safety-critical systems, and verification methodologies. They should be comfortable operating in ambiguous environments while driving technical excellence.

  • 8+ years of relevant engineering experience involving risk assessment, safety management, and product or functional safety.
  • 3+ years of experience developing safety-critical electronic and embedded systems.
  • Proven experience conducting risk assessments and safety reviews for autonomous ground vehicles or similar complex systems.
  • Experience with safety methodologies such as HARA, STPA, FMEA, and related risk analysis approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and implement validation and verification frameworks for end-to-end robotics applications.
  • Strong systems engineering fundamentals and experience working with complex architectures.
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards such as ISO 18497, ISO 26262, ISO/PAS 21448, DO-178, ARP-4754, IEC 62304, or similar frameworks.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly through written and verbal communication.
  • Experience working in fast-paced startup or innovation environments with multiple competing priorities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electromechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience with safety verification of machine learning systems and autonomous robotics is preferred.
  • Hands-on experience with embedded systems development, software development, or verification and validation processes is a plus.
  • Experience with L3-L5 autonomous vehicle safety analysis, embedded Linux, ROS2, AWS, and vehicle architectures is preferred.
