About Birmingham City University

At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.

Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is one of our many strengths, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.

By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.

Role Summary

We are seeking a OIE Performance and Data Officer to join our Office for Institutional Equity, to support the monitoring, analysis, and reporting of the University’s EDI Strategy and associated action plans.

In this role, you will contribute to the effective tracking of progress against EDI priorities by producing data analysis, maintaining performance information, and supporting reporting processes. • Assist in monitoring milestones, KPIs, and deliverables across a range of initiatives.
  • Collect, clean, and analyse student and staff data relating to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Produce regular and ad hoc reports on key metrics (e.g. KPIs in the EDI Strategy, Race Equality Charter, Disability Confident, Athena Swan etc.).
  • Support the development of dashboards and visualisations (e.g. in Excel or Power BI).
  • Contribute to improving data processes, reporting tools, and performance tracking methods.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area (e.g. data analysis, social research, statistics).
  • Experience working with data, including analysis and reporting, and producing reports or summaries for different audiences.
  • Experience working in an administrative or project support role in a complex organisation.
  • Good analytical skills and ability to interpret data.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (e.g. formulas, pivot tables, data handling).
  • Ability to present data clearly and accurately.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion concepts and data.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in UK higher education.
  • Familiarity with Access and Participation Plans or EDI frameworks (e.g. Athena Swan, Race Equality Charter).
  • Experience using data visualisation tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau).
  • Awareness of regulatory requirements in HE (e.g. Office for Students).
  • Experience supporting monitoring or tracking of projects or action plans.
