Job Description
This is a remote position.
Can you take a messy internal process and turn it into a real tool, something people log into and rely on, built fast and built right?
On a typical day you might ship a React front end for an internal tool, wire it to Firebase and a few Google APIs, use Gemini to handle the logic, and hand a team something that replaces an afternoon of manual work.
About Contour
We started in 2020 with a handful of students and a belief that great education should not be out of reach. Today we operate across three brands with 8,000+ students and 425+ team members: roughly 100 in India and 325 onshore in Australia. The India team runs publishing, student experience, CRM and technology, operations, and people and culture.
The tools that run behind the scenes decide how fast hundreds of people can work. You build those tools, and you build them to last a little longer than a script.
About This Role
You build the internal tools and small apps that Contour's teams rely on. This is the developer seat on an enablement function: engineering owns the core product, the LMS, and anything student-facing or touching money, while your team builds the internal tools and automations that make offshore and onshore teams faster.
The flagship example is ContourCut, an internal app built with Firebase, Google Apps Script, Gemini, and React that automates our classroom video editing pipeline. You will build things like that: real tools with a front end people use, wired to the systems and the AI behind them, shipped quickly but with enough engineering discipline that they hold up. That discipline matters here, SSO, server-side versus client-side done right, no exposed API keys, no sensitive data exposure, because a tool that leaks is worse than no tool.
The bar is two things at once: strong real-world product and business sense, and the ability to actually build. You understand how Contour works, so you build the right thing, and you can take it from a front end to a backend to a working release. You use AI to code, and that is encouraged, it is part of how the team ships what it ships. You report to the VP of Global Enablement and Support. You do not build the LMS or heavy, long-term student-facing product; that is engineering's, and you flag what belongs there.
By the end of month three, you have shipped at least one internal tool people use daily, your builds are safe and maintainable, and you are trusted to take a rough internal process and turn it into a working app without hand-holding.
Where the work lives
React: the front ends for the internal tools people actually log into.
Firebase: data, auth, and hosting for the tools you ship.
Google Apps Script and Workspace APIs: the glue into Contour's existing environment.
AI (Gemini and similar): how you build logic and ship faster.
Make.com: where a no-code path is simply the faster way to get there.
What You Will Do
Build internal tools end to end. Front end, logic, and data, from a rough process to a working app people rely on.

Use AI to build fast. Lean on Gemini and similar to prototype and ship, without letting quality slide.
Integrate across systems. Wire tools into Google, Firebase, and Contour's internal systems cleanly.
Keep it safe and maintainable. Sound architecture, no exposed keys, no sensitive data exposure, and documentation others can pick up.
Scope the real problem. Understand how the work actually happens, and build for that.
Requirements
What You Need
You have shipped working software or tools in a professional setting. Years do not matter, shipped work does.
You can build a small app end to end, something like React with a backend such as Firebase.
Comfortable with JavaScript and Google Apps Script.
Comfortable using AI to code, and sound instincts for safe, maintainable builds.

Nice to Have
Hands-on with React, Firebase, or Gemini and similar LLM APIs.
Experience with Make.com or other integration tooling.
Background in edtech, or in media, video, or pipeline tooling.
The Kind of People Who Thrive Here
The people who do well here ship real tools fast and are proud that those tools do not break. They are product-minded, AI-native, and disciplined enough to build safely without gold-plating a simple internal tool into a six-month project. They understand the business well enough to build the right thing the first time. As the function grows, the strongest developers take ownership of larger internal systems.
What good looks like
Real tools, in use: people log in and rely on what you built.
Shipped fast: you move quickly, AI-assisted, from problem to release.
Safe and maintainable: sound architecture, no sensitive data at risk, documented.
The right problem solved: you understood the work and built for it.
Benefits
Fully remote, anywhere in India. Your day runs on India hours with overlap into Australian business time. Compensation is competitive and bench marked to the role and your experience. We discuss it openly early in the process.
Apply with a CV and one paragraph on a tool or app you built and shipped in a professional setting: the stack, and the problem it solved.
