Job Description

Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET)

Automation | Playwright | .NET | Fully Remote (Australia)

Active | Business Fitness is looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) - someone who thinks like a software engineer first, and happens to specialise in building quality into modern software.

The kind of person who doesn't manually repeat the same task twice.

The kind of person who instinctively writes a script, automates the process, and leaves things better than they found them.

If that sounds like you... keep reading.

So, what's the Active | Business Fitness story?

For more than 30 years, Active | Business Fitness has been helping accounting firms work smarter through technology.

Their flagship SaaS platform supports thousands of firms across Australia and the UK with practice management, compliance, workflows, CRM, workpapers and more.

They're proudly Australian-built, fully remote, and investing heavily in modern engineering.

Over the past year they've been uplifting their engineering capability, embracing AI-assisted development, modern DevOps practices and automated quality engineering.

Now they're growing the team again!

The GiG

This isn't a traditional tester role.

You'll join a growing Quality Engineering team focused on one thing:

Building automation that gives developers confidence to ship faster.

You'll spend almost all of your time writing automated tests, improving frameworks, and partnering with software engineers to embed quality earlier in the development lifecycle.

Manual testing?

Only when it genuinely makes sense.

With a growing backlog of automation already mapped out and ready to build, your first few months will be spent helping take automation from "good foundations" to genuine engineering capability across the platform.

Here's the vibe:

  • Build and expand Playwright automation across a growing SaaS platform.
  • Create reliable UI, API and integration tests that engineers actually trust.
  • Work alongside developers to improve coverage, reliability and release confidence.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and modern engineering practices.
  • Help improve testing frameworks, tooling and developer workflows.
  • Use AI-assisted development as part of your day-to-day engineering toolkit.

You Are…

Probably an engineer who found yourself enjoying automation more than feature work.

Or maybe you've been working in QA Automation for a few years and you're looking for a team where automation is genuinely valued - not treated as an afterthought.

You'll ideally bring:

  • Around 3+ years in QA Automation, SDET or software engineering.
  • Strong Playwright experience (or similar modern automation frameworks).
  • .NET/C# experience and solid programming fundamentals.
  • Experience testing modern web applications and APIs.
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines and cloud environments.
  • A genuine interest in AI-assisted software development.
  • A collaborative mindset and the confidence to work closely with engineers every day.

Bonus points if you've worked in SaaS or product companies where quality engineering is part of the development process - not something bolted on at the end.

Why Active | Business Fitness?

  • Fully remote anywhere in Australia.
  • Modern SaaS product with real technical challenges.
  • AI-assisted engineering is encouraged - not feared.
  • Strong engineering culture with genuine investment in automation.
  • Real ownership and influence from day one.
  • Learn alongside experienced engineers who care deeply about building great software.'

If you love writing code, solving engineering problems, and building automation that genuinely improves software quality…
