About The Role

We’re seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Backend Engineer to join our dynamic tech team. In this pivotal role, you will be instrumental in designing and building internet-scale, high-performance infrastructure that supports our revolutionary AI search capabilities. Your core responsibilities will include developing robust, scalable products—ranging from end-to-end feature development to deployment and maintenance. You will master the technical scope of your domain, raising the bar for engineering quality across the organization. Collaborating on product roadmaps and driving key technical decisions will be central to your role, as you own large, cross-functional initiatives from conception to delivery. Working autonomously alongside the CTO and other teams, you will conduct code reviews, foster knowledge sharing, and contribute to a culture of technical excellence. Your work will directly impact our ability to index hundreds of millions of web pages daily, stream multimodal search functionalities, and optimize large-scale embedding streams, all while minimizing compute costs and ensuring system robustness.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 6 years of extensive backend experience building and operating large-scale distributed systems
• Proficiency in designing internet-scale, high-performance infrastructure
• Strong programming skills in Node.js, Python, Java, and related technologies
• Experience with cloud-native technologies such as Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines
• Solid understanding of infrastructure management and best practices for continuous integration and deployment
• Experience with databases and search engines like PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, Vespa, and Apache Storm
• Curiosity or experience in AI technologies and a commitment to continuous learning
• Ability to thrive in fast-paced environments, demonstrating resilience and a proactive approach to problem-solving

Responsibilities

• Design and develop internet-scale, high-performance infrastructure to support AI search engines and data indexing
• Build, deploy, and maintain new features from end to end, ensuring reliability and scalability
• Master the technical scope of your domain, setting high standards for engineering quality and efficiency
• Collaborate with product managers and other stakeholders on roadmaps and technical decision-making
• Own large, cross-functional initiatives from conception through to successful delivery
• Work autonomously alongside leadership, including the CTO, to drive technical excellence
• Conduct thorough code reviews and promote best practices within the engineering team
• Share knowledge and mentor team members to foster a culture of continuous improvement
• Optimize system performance, including reducing latency and enhancing GPU utilization
