Job descriptionAbout SelfDecode

SelfDecode turns DNA, lab, and lifestyle data into personalized, science-backed health recommendations. Members rely on us to be accurate, which makes QA one of the most important roles on the team.

About the Role

We're hiring a Senior QA Engineer to own and elevate quality across the product. Today our QA practice is primarily manual. Your mission is to flip that: start around 80% manual / 20% automation and gradually move it to 20% / 80% by building a real automation foundation.

This isn't a pure strategy or "thinker" role. Two teams ship features every sprint, so expect a heavy manual testing load alongside the automation work. We keep things light: no bureaucracy, no elaborate test plans. Grab a ticket, test the feature, log what's broken, move on.

You'll set the strategy, choose the tools, and design the frameworks, and you'll spend real hours executing tests while that automation grows.

What You'll Do
  • Own the QA strategy: what to automate, what to leave manual, how the test pyramid should look.
  • Build the Playwright suite for web UI and the API testing layer from the ground up.
  • Run focused manual and exploratory testing on web and mobile while automation grows.
  • Cover web UI, REST APIs, and mobile (manual with basic automated smoke).
  • Design test approaches for LLM and agent-driven features, including evals for non-deterministic outputs.
  • Establish testing standards and mentor the team on quality practices.
What We're Looking For
Must-haves:
  • Test strategy and framework design. You've architected a QA approach, not just executed someone else's plan.
  • Strong Playwright expertise. You've built and scaled a Playwright suite in production without it going flaky.
  • API testing. Comfortable automating REST and integration tests (Postman, pytest, REST Assured, or equivalents).
  • Mobile testing. Solid manual mobile (iOS and Android), plus the ability to add automated smoke where it pays off.
  • Hands-on LLM usage. You actively use LLM agents in your day-to-day work, whether for test design, automation, debugging, or anything else.
How you work:
  • Extreme autonomy and reliability. You set direction and consistently deliver.
  • Ownership and initiative. You drive QA. You don't wait for tickets.
  • Eye for detail and user empathy. You think like a user and spot edge cases.
  • Can mentor and level up a team.
  • Strong written and spoken English. Our team spans many accents, so clarity matters more than perfection.
Why You'll Like It Here
  • Small, fast-paced team. Real autonomy and influence as long as you deliver.
  • Greenfield automation. You're not maintaining someone else's flaky suite. You build the practice from scratch.
  • AI-powered product testing. You'll define what great QA looks like for LLM and agent-driven features.
  • Fully distributed, async. Work from anywhere on your own schedule.
