Lead Product Designer (Design Systems)

The Design team at Backpack plays a critical role in executing on our mission to build the most

trusted and easy-to-use products in crypto. We take on hard user-experience problems and turn

complex technical challenges into products that feel effortless. As a Lead Product Designer on

Design Systems, you'll own the foundation the rest of our product is built on — a scalable,

token-driven system that keeps every surface consistent, accessible, and ready to plug into

modern AI-assisted design and build workflows.

You'll work closely with Product Design, Engineering, and Product Management to build a

world-class product experience at scale.

What you'll be doing (ie. job duties)

- Own our design system end to end — tokens, primitives, components, patterns, and

documentation.

- Define a token architecture (color, typography, spacing, elevation, motion) that scales

cleanly across themes and platforms.

- Partner daily with engineering to ship the system in code, with tight Figma-to-code parity.

- Advocate for and educate product teams on best practices for designing and building with

the system.

- Set the standards and governance that keep the system coherent as more designers and

engineers contribute.

- Structure the system to be AI-ready — semantic, well-documented, and consumable by

the tools reshaping design and front-end work.

What we look for in you (ie. job requirements)

- 7+ years of experience as a product designer, design engineer, or similar role, with

significant time spent on design systems.

- A deep passion for bridging design, code, and systems-level thinking.

- Demonstrated experience building or substantially scaling a design system at a product

company (please share examples).

- Deep expertise with design tokens, theming, and component architecture in Figma.

- Strong understanding of how systems translate into production front-end code, and a track

record of close collaboration with engineers.

- Fluency with accessibility standards (WCAG) and an eye for the details that make a

product feel trustworthy.

Nice to haves

- Experience in fintech, crypto, trading, or other data-dense, regulated products.

- Familiarity with AI-assisted design or front-end tooling.
