Job Description
What we're building
OrbDB is building data infrastructure for AI reliability. For every prediction a model makes, the platform determines whether the model is sufficiently certain for the result to be acted on automatically or whether the case should be routed to a human reviewer.
Today’s AI production systems are unable to distinguish which of their predictions are trustworthy. We are building the layer that allows organizations to automate the cases where automation is statistically justified, and to escalate the rest with confidence.
OrbDB is founded and led by researchers with deep expertise in the underlying methods.
The role
You will take technical leadership of the data platform: the ingestion, storage, query, and serving layers that turn our reliability methods into a production system. You will own how the platform is built and how it evolves.
You will work closely with our Head of Engineering on the broader system and shape the data team as it grows. Unlike other AI startups, OrbDB builds on a mathematical foundation. So do the teams behind it. OrbDB Labs is a place where solid ideas and good taste matter more than loud voices.

Specifically, you will:
- Lead the architecture of the data platform, in close dialogue with the founding team on scientific direction and priorities.
- Contribute substantially to the codebase. This is a hands-on technical leadership role.
- Establish the engineering standards and conventions that the data team will work with.
What we are looking for
- Substantial experience building data infrastructure in production. The work you have shipped matters more to us than the number of years.
- Strong command of a systems-level language and the modern data ecosystem, including tools such as Arrow, Parquet, columnar storage, query engines, and vector stores.
- A record of delivering infrastructure that real users have come to depend on.
- Genuine interest in the statistical and Machine Learning concepts that sit beneath the platform. You do not need to be a researcher, but terms like Conformal Prediction and calibration should be ones you are eager to understand deeply.
- Judgment to lead through the work itself, by the standard you hold and the example you set.

Useful, but not required
- Experience with on-premise or customer-perimeter deployments.
- A background in databases, query engines, or distributed systems, particularly at organizations known for engineering depth.
- Experience shipping into regulated or security-sensitive environments (finance, government, healthcare, or similar), where SOC 2, ISO 27001, or GDPR shaped how you built.
- Open-source contributions to the data ecosystem.
