About The Role

The Backend Engineer on the AI Platform team plays a vital role in designing, developing, and maintaining the backend systems that empower internal products, customer-facing features, AI-enabled workflows, and operational decision-making tools. This position requires a highly skilled professional capable of building scalable, reliable, and secure backend services that support diverse use cases across the organization. The engineer will contribute to core system capabilities including service-oriented architectures, APIs, workflow orchestration, event-driven integrations, identity and permissions management, and operational tooling. Success in this role demands strong technical expertise, systems thinking, and the ability to deliver dependable solutions within a cloud-based, regulated environment. The role offers the flexibility of remote work, a competitive salary range of $140,000 to $240,000, along with an annual bonus, comprehensive benefits including medical coverage from day one, and a company‑matched 401(k).

Qualifications

• 3-5+ years of experience building and operating production-grade backend systems, APIs, services, or distributed applications
• Strong fundamentals in software engineering, including data structures, algorithms, system design, debugging, testing, and code quality
• Experience designing, maintaining, and debugging services supporting real users or business-critical workflows
• Proficiency in modern backend programming languages such as Python, Go, C++, Rust, Java, Kotlin, Scala, TypeScript, or C#
• Experience with API design, service boundaries, event-driven or asynchronous architectures
• Knowledge of relational and non-relational data stores, transactional systems, and data modeling
• Hands-on experience deploying and operating services on cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Strong SQL skills, including schema design, migrations, and query optimization
• Experience with AI-powered capabilities, including orchestration, retrieval, and workflow automation involving LLMs
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, observability tools, and incident response processes

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain scalable production backend services supporting various internal and external use cases
• Develop well-structured APIs, domain models, service interfaces, and business logic that are easy to operate and extend
• Create scalable workflows supporting complex business processes across multiple domains such as loans, documents, accounts, and permissions
• Ensure backend services are reliable, observable, resilient, and capable of handling evolving data volumes and product needs
• Contribute to service architecture decisions supporting transactional, operational, analytical, and AI-driven workloads
• Integrate backend systems with internal platforms, third-party APIs, databases, message queues, and cloud services
• Design patterns for service boundaries, idempotency, consistency, retries, schema evolution, and backward compatibility
• Deploy, operate, and continuously improve backend services on cloud platforms using automation tools
• Implement security best practices including authentication, authorization, permissions, audit logging, and data protection
• Establish operational standards for API documentation, runbooks, change management, and production readiness
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable backend solutions
• Support downstream consumers of backend capabilities, including product teams, analysts, and AI systems
