Job Description

QContact powers business communication for some of the largest enterprises in South Africa. Founded in the UK, we have invested heavily in building and scaling our South African operations, with a growing local engineering team.

We operate large-scale, latency-sensitive communication infrastructure across multiple global regions. Reliability, automation, and operational excellence are core to how we work.

We are looking for an experienced DevOps Engineer who has actually operated Linux and Kubernetes systems in production environments at scale.

This is not a junior DevOps role, and not a developer transitioning into infrastructure. We are specifically looking for someone who is comfortable debugging real production issues, improving reliability, and taking ownership of critical systems.

What you'll be working on

  • Kubernetes (multi-region production clusters)
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Linux (Debian-based environments)
  • PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Redis
  • Kamailio & FreeSWITCH
  • CI/CD and infrastructure automation

Responsibilites

  • Operate and improve production Kubernetes infrastructure
  • Debug complex Linux, networking, and container-related issues
  • Automate infrastructure provisioning and operational workflows
  • Improve deployment reliability and reduce operational overhead
  • Maintain and improve CI/CD pipelines
  • Monitor platform health, performance, and availability
  • On-call for out of hours issues, making sure you proactively reduce incidents through engineering improvements during the day so any out-of-hour escalations are kept to an absolute minimum.
  • Work closely with developers to improve operational standards and deployment practices

Required Experience

You should be able to demonstrate real-world operational experience with:

  • Linux system administration
  • Kubernetes in production environments
  • Containers, networking, and troubleshooting distributed systems
  • Infrastructure automation and operational tooling
  • Performance tuning and reliability engineering
  • Diagnosing production issues under pressure

You should be comfortable working from the command line and understanding systems end-to-end, rather than relying entirely on managed tooling or dashboards.

Ideal Additional Experience

We would look favourably on candidates who have experience with

  • Microsoft Azure
  • PostgreSQL
  • CI/CD pipeline design and maintenance
  • SIP/VoIP infrastructure experience (Kamailio, FreeSWITCH)
  • Observability and monitoring systems
  • Infrastructure-as-Code tooling

What we offer

  • Fully remote role — work from anywhere in South Africa
  • 100% company-paid medical insurance (covering you, your partner, and children)
  • 20 days paid annual leave + public holidays
  • Company-provided laptop (Mac or PC — your choice)
  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Immediate start available

Important Requirements

  • You must have permanent right to work in South Africa (no sponsorship available)
  • You will be the primary infrastructure owner, including out-of-hours support when required. The role is heavily focused on engineering systems that are stable enough to rarely require intervention.
  • You must have a stable internet connection
