Job Description

Role Overview

Voting Rights Lab, a national nonpartisan 501(c)(3), and its 501(c)(4) affiliate are fighting the state-level battles that will shape elections in 2026, 2028, and for decades to come. In 2025 alone, we stopped a wave of proof-of-citizenship mandates in red and purple states from Texas to Michigan, and produced the first-ever map of election law vulnerabilities — showing where losing candidates can exploit state laws to challenge legitimate results. Grounded in deep state-level relationships and cross-ideological credibility, we anticipate threats and deliver solutions where democracy is most at risk.

The Director of People & Culture leads and directs all aspects of the human resources function, establishing and executing strategies across the organization. This role is responsible for the strategic development, management, and oversight of all core HR functions, including talent acquisition, employee onboarding and retention, compensation, organizational culture & engagement, HR systems, compliance, employee relations, and payroll administration. This role is a key leader and strategic advisor who resolves complex organizational challenges and ensures that all HR systems and policies are legally compliant, equitable, and fully aligned with the organization's strategic objectives.

If you are passionate about fostering a positive and inclusive work environment and enabling employee growth and success, we encourage you to apply. We offer a collaborative and innovative work environment, competitive compensation, and opportunities for professional advancement.

Voting Rights Lab is a fully remote organization, and this position can be based anywhere in the United States. This position will require occasional travel, representing about 5% of the time.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Organization Culture & Engagement

  • Develop strategies to ensure the organization embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion in both spirit and process.
  • Develop strategies and tactics to support the organization’s overarching goals, foster an inclusive work environment, and strengthen culture over time
  • Ensure transparency and consistency in people-related policies and practices
  • Lead and convene the organization’s Culture Committee

Staff and Organization Development

  • Design and lead the performance review process to drive a culture of feedback and continuous learning
  • Hold a systems view and manage organizational challenges as opportunities for learning and growth
  • Establish and coordinate trainings to help all employees step into full responsibility for their well-being, tasks, roles, and impact on the organization
  • Develop and coordinate training to support growth in organizational competencies and other skills
  • Coach managers to be better supervisors and support employee learning, growth, and advancement

Talent Acquisition and Retention

  • Develop and manage an exciting, employee-centered, full-cycle employment experience — attracting, hiring, retaining, and offboarding – for a diverse and highly skilled staff
  • Utilize a data-driven approach to identify trends and recommend proactive solutions to ensure solid talent management decision-making that incorporates an equity lens

Human Resources Management

  • In collaboration with the Chief Financial & Administration Officer, ensure that all HR policies, benefits, compensation, and practices reflect organizational values
  • Expertly guide the organization to address and resolve employee relations incidents, personnel matters, and other organizational challenges and issues that arise
  • Perform exit interviews, monitor trends in staff departures, and develop retention strategies
  • Maintain current knowledge and understanding of state and federal employment law
  • Work with the Manager of Operations & Compliance on bi-weekly payroll processing, quarterly and annual compliance filings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 2 years in a director-level role.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience working with ADP Workforce Now
  • Proven ability to build strong, effective interpersonal relationships and maintain a high-touch, service-oriented approach.
  • Excellent organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Deep working knowledge of HR principles, practices, and procedures, or a demonstrated drive to quickly acquire expertise.
  • Expert time management skills with a proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet critical deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a high-paced environment and manage competing priorities.

Salary and benefits:

We value our staff by offering competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, detailed below.
