Scope:
- The Data Centre of Excellence (DCoE) requires a Senior Data Architect to support the delivery of key roadmap items for the OneData Alberta and Crosswalk initiatives.
- The Government of Alberta’s approach to OneData Alberta and Crosswalk initiatives is enabled through a cloud-based and on-premise Data Fabric and/ Data Mesh framework for organizing, managing, and delivering enterprise data assets. The DCoE is responsible for delivering high-value data assets and services—such as analytical models, dashboards, and visualizations—to support critical analytical, policy, and legislative functions. This role is essential to ensuring these data assets are architected, governed, and delivered in a scalable, secure, and sustainable manner.
- This position provides senior-level architectural leadership and strategic direction across the OneData Alberta and Crosswalk initiatives. It includes leading foundational activities for Data Access such as schema analysis, data profiling, and the development of enterprise data architecture, enterprise data models, data quality (DQ) frameworks, and metadata standards. The role also guides the design and implementation of data linkages and crosswalk frameworks, enabling integrated and interoperable data across a federated data ecosystem, and supporting the development of strategic data assets for OneData Alberta.
- As a Data Architect, this role contributes deep expertise in modern data platforms, architectures, and data product development practices. It supports the evolution of a Data Centre of Excellence that delivers reusable, high-quality data products and services, enabling improved data access, advanced analytics, and data-informed decision-making across the organization.
- The role works closely with leadership, architects, delivery teams, and external partners to enable a federated data ecosystem. It requires strong stakeholder engagement, including facilitating discussions, mediating complex data relationships, and building consensus among diverse technical and business groups.
- This position plays a key role in advancing the cultural shift toward treating data as a strategic enterprise asset, fostering innovation, and ensuring alignment between business priorities and data technology solutions.
Duties:
General Responsibilities (any or all):
Architecture & Strategy Leadership:
- Lead the design and delivery of enterprise and solution architecture for data platforms and data products
- Define and govern enterprise data models, architecture standards, and best practices
- Translate business strategies and priorities into scalable data architecture solutions
- Provide thought leadership in Data Management and Analytics architecture
Data Platform & Product Enablement:

- Support the design, development, and delivery of data products within a Data Fabric and/ Data Mesh framework
- Guide the implementation of data linkages, crosswalk frameworks, and integration patterns
- Establish frameworks for data quality, metadata management, and AI-enabled data assets
- Model proof-of-concept solutions, including data integration and orchestration approaches
Stakeholder Engagement & Advisory:
- Lead workshops, discovery sessions, and stakeholder engagements to define requirements and business value
- Provide architectural consultation and recommendations to leadership, project teams, and stakeholders
- Prepare and deliver presentations to steering committees and senior stakeholders
- Facilitate consensus on complex data and technology solutions across diverse groups
Governance, Standards & Innovation:
- Define and promote best practices in data governance, data sharing, data integration, and data quality
- Support data modernization initiatives, including cloud migration and application modernization
- Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies to optimize data product delivery and cost efficiency
- Ensure alignment with enterprise priorities, including security, privacy, information management and data classification
Delivery Support & Collaboration:
- Collaborate with data architects, engineers, scientists, and product teams to ensure consistent architecture across initiatives
- Review designs, data models, and pipelines, providing guidance on optimization and performance
- Support the development of sustainable and scalable data product delivery processes
- Manage tasks, risks, and action items, including escalation as required
Leadership & Organizational Enablement:
- Coach, mentor, and support team members in developing innovative data solutions
- Promote a client-centric, service-oriented delivery approach
- Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and data as a strategic asset
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Deliverables:

Equipment requirements:
- Resource will require own equipment
- Resource must provide their own computer and related equipment. The computer's operating system must be a modern version of Windows or MacOS that is compatible with Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) and related software for remote access. Windows is preferred due to better compatibility. AVD/remote-related software will be installed on the resource's computer.
- In the event that the Contractor’s resources are directed to work remotely, the Contractor shall be responsible for providing all of its equipment, including computers, software, printers, supplies, desks and chairs. However, the Province shall ensure that the Contractor’s resources have the necessary access and credentials to the Government of Alberta’s system.
- In the event that, the Contractor’s resources are directed to work in-person, the Province shall provide the requisite office space, furniture and office supplies. However, the Contractor shall continue to be responsible for providing computers and software and the Province shall continue to ensure that the Contractor’s resources have the necessary access and credentials to the Government of Alberta’s system.
- The fixed rate quoted must be inclusive of all overhead, office space and equipment, including supplies, administrative burden, mark-up and all other costs to perform the Services for the duration of the Contract.
Working Hours:
• Standard Hours of work are 08:15 – 16:30 Alberta time, Monday through Friday excluding holidays observed by the Province
• Work must be done from within Canada, due to network and data security issues.
• It is anticipated the role will be 100% remote, however in the event of an onsite meeting, the GoA does not pay for travel to attend on-site meetings, nor any expenses related to relocation, commuting, housing/accommodation, food/drink.
Notes on Location:
- Resource must be willing and able to work full-time, remotely during standard hours of work from 08:15 - 16:30 Alberta time, (No funding will be provided by the client for relocation or travel to work or meetings.)
Incumbency:
• This is a net new position.
Standard Background check required:
• The Supplier shall, prior to commencement of the Services, provide the Province, on its request and at no cost to the Province, with criminal record checks.
Mandatory Training Courses:
• Once hired the resource will be required to complete all mandatory training which includes but not limited to Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and Security awareness training. There may also be some optional courses as well.
