Senior Software Engineer (Security & Privacy)

This role offers a hands-on engineering opportunity to design, implement, and maintain advanced security and privacy features in a large-scale, high-traffic web platform. You will work closely with a distributed team of engineers and product managers to protect users, prevent abuse, and strengthen platform resilience against evolving threats. The position involves both developing secure software and reviewing contributions from other engineers, ensuring high standards for code quality, documentation, and testing. You will have the chance to influence security architecture, implement modern authentication technologies, and address complex security and privacy challenges. Operating in a fully remote environment, you will collaborate across time zones while maintaining strong communication and team culture. Your work will directly impact the safety and trust of millions of global users and contributors.

Accountabilities

• Design, develop, and deliver security and privacy features for web applications and platform services.
• Review and guide implementation choices across engineering teams to ensure secure and compliant architecture.
• Lead by example in code quality, security best practices, and team collaboration, fostering transparency and empathy.
• Conduct internal and external security and privacy reviews, including threat modeling and risk assessments.
• Maintain and improve security-critical components, addressing technical debt and operational issues.
• Provide support for application security and privacy incidents, monitoring, and response.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement features and improvements aligned with platform goals.
  
  

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ideally with a focus on security or privacy.
• Strong understanding of web application development, with experience in PHP and JavaScript preferred.
• Experience developing secure software and security-focused product features.
• Ability to break down complex projects into actionable tasks and mentor less experienced team members.
• Familiarity with testing, observability, and operational excellence practices.
• Ability to explain complex security issues to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience working in remote, distributed teams across multiple time zones.
• Interest in evolving security skills, including identifying and mitigating application-level vulnerabilities.
• Experience with anti-abuse mechanisms, threat modeling, secure design patterns, or open-source contributions is a plus.
