Lead Database Engineer – Data Platform / Infrastructure

We are partnering with a leading global quantitative hedge fund to hire a senior, hands-on Lead Database Engineer into a high-impact data platform team. This is a critical role sitting at the core of the firm’s data and trading infrastructure — offering strong ownership, visibility, and influence across research, trading, and technology functions.

This position is a true player-coach role (30% management / 70% hands-on), responsible for leading a small team while remaining deeply involved in the design, optimisation, and reliability of mission-critical database systems. You will play a key role in scaling and modernising on-premise database environments, ensuring performance, resilience, and data integrity across high-volume, low-latency systems.

You will be responsible for designing and evolving robust database architecture, improving performance and availability, and driving best practices across database engineering and administration in a highly demanding trading environment.

What they’re looking for:

• 8+ years of experience in database engineering / DBA roles within production environments
• Strong hands-on expertise in PostgreSQL and SQL Server (on-premise) — this is essential
• Proven experience managing high-availability systems, disaster recovery, and performance tuning
• Experience leading or mentoring engineers (player-coach / tech lead experience preferred)
