As a Research/Senior Scientist at VTT, you will have a genuine opportunity to make an impact on both our customers and society. Our researchers work closely with industry partners and academia, often in interdisciplinary research groups, addressing real-world challenges through science-based innovations. In this role, you will play a key part in developing data-driven modelling and design optimisation methodologies for electric vehicle systems, with a focus on AI/ML-based approaches for system design and performance optimization. Your work will contribute to advancing the state of the art in electromobility and supporting the transition towards sustainable transport.
Our Batteries and Charging team focuses on the electrification of transport to tackle climate change by accelerating the shift from the use of fossil fuels towards sustainable transport. Our core areas include battery systems, EV charging, and EV fleet optimization. We actively apply AI/ML in topics such as:
- battery state estimation, diagnostics, and prognostics
- charging demand forecasting and smart charging strategies
- surrogate and reduced-order modelling of batteries and other EV components
- system-level optimization of EVs and fleets.

- Advancing data-driven modelling methodology development and application for various components and subsystems
- Contributing to data-driven electric truck system design optimization methodology development through learning algorithms and statistical use of synthetic data and real operational data from vehicle performance and operations, operating conditions and interface to energy infrastructure and management
- Contributing to digital twin development for vehicles and their subsystems
- Collaborating in research team and project group with co-writing and project work
- Participating in new project preparations, especially within the Horizon Europe work programme
- Participating actively in dissemination with journal publications and presenting results in conferences and seminars
- Supervising or tutoring junior team members
- You have a doctoral or Master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, automation engineering or a closely related field.
- You are skilled in data-driven modelling methodologies, data analytics, and programming (Python, MATLAB, C/C++)
- You have a keen interest in real-time systems and digital twin development.
- You are interested in electric vehicle research field, and you may already have knowledge of electric powertrains and related technologies.
- You have excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.
