About the Role
We are seeking an exceptional VP of Engineering to lead our technology vision and engineering execution as we scale our digital health platform. This is a rare opportunity to architect and build transformative technology at the intersection of AI and digital phenotyping for mental health. You will be responsible for defining our technical strategy, building and leading our engineering team, and ensuring our platform meets the highest standards of security, scalability, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Strategy:
- Define and execute the company's technology vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with business objectives
- Lead architectural decisions for our digital health platform, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security
- Drive technical innovation in AI/ML models, digital phenotyping algorithms, and passive sensing technologies
- Establish engineering best practices, development processes, and quality standards
- Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies that can enhance our product capabilities
- Make critical build vs. buy decisions and manage the technology stack evolution
Software Engineering & Architecture:
- Design and implement robust, scalable system architecture for mobile and cloud-based applications
- Oversee development of iOS and Android applications with seamless user experiences
- Architect backend systems, APIs, and microservices infrastructure
- Ensure code quality through reviews, testing frameworks, and continuous integration/deployment pipelines
- Lead technical decisions on frameworks, languages, and development tools
- Implement monitoring, alerting, and incident response systems
Data Engineering & AI/ML:
- Architect data infrastructure for collecting, processing, and storing sensitive health data at scale
- Design data pipelines for real-time and batch processing of digital phenotyping signals
- Lead development and deployment of machine learning models for mental health risk detection
- Establish data governance frameworks ensuring privacy, security, and regulatory compliance
- Build analytics capabilities for clinical validation and product insights
- Collaborate with research teams to translate clinical requirements into technical implementations
Regulatory & Security Compliance:
- Ensure platform compliance with prevailing regulations (HIPAA, GDPR, PDPA)
- Implement security best practices including encryption, authentication, and access controls
- Lead technical aspects of regulatory submissions and audits
- Establish data protection policies and incident response procedures
- Work with clinical and legal teams on IRB requirements and data handling protocols

Required Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Postgraduate degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field preferred
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with 5+ years in senior technical leadership roles
- Proven track record of building and scaling technology platforms from early stage to production
- Experience leading engineering teams of min. 5 people
- Prior CTO, VP Engineering, or equivalent leadership experience in startup or high-growth environment
- Experience in health technology applications
- Working knowledge of digital phenotyping, passive sensing, or wearable device integration
Technical Expertise:
- Deep expertise in software architecture, system design, and distributed systems
- Strong proficiency in modern programming languages
- Extensive experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure-as-code
- Expertise in mobile application development (iOS and Android native or cross-platform)
- Strong background in data engineering and warehousing
- Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks
- Proficiency in SQL and NoSQL databases, data modeling, and optimization
- Experience with containerization and microservices architecture
- Knowledge of API design, RESTful services, and real-time data streaming
