Job Description


What You Will Do

The Test Engineering group (V-14) of the Weapons Engineering Verification and Validation Division (V) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Research and Development Engineer to support the weapons mission. The successful applicant will be engaged in component, subsystem, and system testing within the Data Acquisition and Instrumentation team. Testing activities require working in a team environment with technologists, engineers, and scientists within LANL, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the Department of Defense (DoD), and other institutions to perform successful experimental operations. These operations include, but are not limited to: specification of instrumentation, instrumentation application, and fielding and collection of experimental data. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to travel periodically to other sites within the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).

The Instrumentation Assembly Engineer is primarily responsible for supporting the achievement of programmatic objectives through the testing and experimental process: sensor suite planning with the customer, review drawings/documents for requirements and specifications, instrumentation design review with V-5 Assembly Team, oversee installation of instrumentation during assembly, data acquisition, and preparation of close-out test documentation. Job responsibilities will require working in controlled hazardous environments that may include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, high explosives (HE), and other hazardous materials.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience advising and guiding experimental work including mentoring junior staff, students and technicians.
  • Demonstrated thorough experience and knowledge of test engineering including assembly, test design, planning, preparation, execution, data reduction and analysis, customer interfacing, and documenting of experimental work.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently and with changing priorities while delivering multiple products on schedule.
  • Ability to accomplish technical tasks while working independently and as part of a team with other engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and experience interacting with all levels of personnel and customers.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation use/installation for test execution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GD&T

Education/Experience: Position requires a Master's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution and 6 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level a Ph.D. may be preferred.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience in nuclear weapons testing and qualification.
  • Knowledge of LANL weapon systems
  • Experience in customer interfacing with contractors, NNSA, DOE or DOD
  • Experience in project management or leadership
  • Demonstrated knowledge PDMlink for document configuration and management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of hazard analysis for assembly and disassembly operations

  • Active Q Clearance

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their
