About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to join our Customer Observability/Insights team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for architecting, building, and maintaining large-scale distributed systems that power DigitalOcean's customer-facing observability ecosystem. Your expertise will help deliver reliable, scalable, and developer-friendly solutions that enable our teams to monitor, measure, and optimize cloud infrastructure at scale. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including engineering, product management, and design—you will drive technical initiatives from conception through to deployment, ensuring high performance and operational excellence. Your work will directly influence the stability, reliability, and scalability of our cloud platform, supporting millions of users worldwide.

Qualifications

  • 15+ years of relevant industry experience building and operating large-scale cloud services or distributed systems
  • Strong programming experience in Go (Golang) and a deep understanding of distributed systems fundamentals
  • Solid knowledge of observability, monitoring, and alerting systems such as Prometheus and Grafana
  • Experience working with OpenTelemetry (OTEL) Collector, including instrumentation, data pipelines, and telemetry ingestion for metrics, logs, and traces
  • Proven expertise in designing and implementing scalable event-driven architectures using Kafka or similar technologies
  • Hands-on experience with gRPC, Terraform, and Ansible for service communication and infrastructure automation
  • Working knowledge of SQL, Redis, and NoSQL databases
  • Demonstrated ability to improve system reliability through operational excellence
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to make pragmatic technical trade-offs
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially with distributed teams
  • Ownership mindset with the ability to independently deliver high-impact projects

Responsibilities

  • Architect, design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services and distributed systems
  • Lead technical initiatives and large cross-team projects from concept to production
  • Collaborate with product managers, UX designers, and engineering teams to deliver comprehensive solutions
  • Develop expertise in observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and time-series databases
  • Build and maintain high-performance APIs and microservices using Go (Golang) and gRPC, integrating with systems like Kafka, Redis, and NoSQL databases
  • Automate infrastructure deployment and configuration management using Terraform and Ansible
  • Utilize SQL and other data tools for data analysis, service integration, and operational insights
  • Lead debugging, troubleshooting, and performance tuning efforts for complex distributed systems
  • Champion operational excellence by enhancing monitoring, alerting, and reliability practices
  • Provide technical mentorship and guidance to fellow engineers
