About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Machine Learning Scientist to join our Central AI team based in Bellevue, WA. This pivotal role involves leading the development of advanced machine learning algorithms, building scalable models, and integrating AI functionalities into Atlassian’s suite of products and services. As part of the Central AI organization, you will work on constructing the foundational infrastructure, data pipelines, and frameworks essential for accelerating AI innovation across the company. Your expertise will be instrumental in designing system and model architectures, conducting experiments, and guiding a team of emerging ML engineers. The role offers a unique opportunity to influence the future of AI-driven features at Atlassian, ensuring that our products remain at the forefront of technological advancement. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including product management, engineering, and analytics—is a core aspect of this position, aimed at translating complex data science concepts into practical business solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
• 5+ years of industry experience in data science, machine learning, or AI development
• Proficiency in Python or Java, with the ability to write performant, production-quality code
• Strong familiarity with SQL, Spark, and cloud data environments such as AWS or Databricks
• Experience in building and scaling machine learning models for business applications using large datasets
• Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex data science concepts to diverse audiences
• Focus on delivering practical, business-oriented solutions with an understanding of the 80/20 rule
• Agile development mindset, embracing continuous iteration and improvement

• Lead the design, development, and deployment of advanced machine learning models and algorithms
• Collaborate with product, engineering, and analytics teams to integrate AI features into Atlassian products
• Construct and optimize scalable data pipelines and infrastructure to support AI initiatives
• Conduct rigorous experimentation, model evaluations, and performance tuning to ensure robustness
• Provide mentorship and guidance to emerging ML engineers and data scientists
• Translate complex data insights into clear, actionable business recommendations
