About The Role

The Staff Software Engineer position at Block, within the Ledgering team of the Financial Platform organization, offers a unique opportunity to influence the core infrastructure powering Cash App. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, high-quality ledger systems that process millions of transactions daily with zero tolerance for discrepancies. As a key member of an autonomous engineering team, you will drive strategic technical initiatives, solve complex problems, and ensure the robustness of financial infrastructure. You will collaborate with global teams across the United States, Australia, and Europe, operating in a dynamic environment that values innovation, diversity, and continuous improvement. The role also provides opportunities to mentor junior engineers, influence technical standards, and embed AI-driven practices to enhance organizational efficiency and security.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience working on complex, scalable systems and delivering high-quality software solutions
  • Proven leadership in strategic or complex initiatives with clear organizational impact
  • Strong expertise in Java and Kotlin programming languages
  • Experience with MySQL, Vitess, and cloud-based infrastructure, particularly Amazon Web Services
  • Knowledge of Kafka and event-driven architecture patterns
  • Familiarity with testing frameworks such as JUnit, and development tools like Hibernate and Guice
  • Proficiency with HTTP, JSON, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with internal engineering teams
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in ambiguous environments with a curious and innovative mindset
  • Empathy and a people-first leadership approach, capable of guiding teams through technical and organizational challenges
