About The Role
The Samsara AI team is dedicated to building end-to-end AI solutions and developing core machine learning infrastructure to support our diverse customer base. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will work with petabyte-scale datasets—including sensor, diagnostic, video, and text data—to address critical challenges faced by physical operations worldwide. Your role involves collaborating closely with ML engineers, data scientists, full-stack developers, and firmware engineers to develop and optimize AI-driven features and services. This position offers the flexibility of remote work within the United States, with occasional travel up to 5%. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided for this role.

Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer
- Profound expertise in optimizing ML models and systems for edge computing constraints
- Proficiency with frameworks such as Spark, Ray, or similar
- Strong programming skills in Python or equivalent languages
- Proficiency in C++ or Rust
- Deep understanding of the iterative machine learning product development process
- Experience developing and deploying production-grade code at large scale
- Ability to translate ambiguous customer and business requirements into clear problem definitions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience coaching and mentoring ML engineers
Preferred qualifications include proficiency in self-serving data for experiments, a track record of high-impact AI projects, and expertise in computer vision and multi-model models.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of critical AI product initiatives on edge devices
- Develop both tactical AI solutions and long-term research strategies
- Work with petabyte-scale datasets, including text, diagnostics, sensor, video, and location data from customer operations
- Collaborate across business units to prototype new AI experiences and optimize ML models for edge deployment
- Stay current with industry and academic research, integrating relevant innovations into Samsara’s solutions
- Champion Samsara’s cultural principles and foster an inclusive, innovative work environment
- Mentor junior team members and contribute to the growth of the AI engineering community within the company
