About The Role
The Samsara AI team is responsible for building comprehensive end-to-end AI solutions for our customers, along with developing core machine learning infrastructure that powers our products. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer, you will work with petabyte-scale sensor, diagnostic, video, and text data to address critical challenges faced by our Physical Operations customers worldwide. Your role involves designing and implementing AI models and solutions that operate efficiently on edge devices, optimizing performance, and collaborating closely with ML engineers, scientists, firmware developers, and full-stack engineers. This position is remote, open to candidates residing in the United States, and may require travel up to 5%. Please note that relocation assistance is not provided for this role. Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience as a Machine Learning Engineer
- Profound expertise in optimizing machine learning models for edge compute constraints
- Proficiency with frameworks such as Spark, Ray, or similar
- Strong programming skills in Python or comparable languages
- Experience coding in C++ or Rust
- Deep understanding of the iterative machine learning product development process
- Proven track record of developing and deploying production-scale AI solutions
- Ability to translate ambiguous customer and business requirements into clear problem definitions
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience mentoring and coaching ML engineers
- Lead the design and implementation of critical AI product initiatives on edge devices, ensuring scalability and efficiency
- Develop both tactical AI solutions and strategic research initiatives to advance product capabilities
- Work with petabyte-scale data sources, including text, sensor diagnostics, video, and location data, to solve complex problems
- Collaborate across business units to explore new AI experiences and optimize machine learning models for edge deployment
- Stay current with industry and academic research, adopting novel technologies that align with Samsara’s strategic goals
- Champion Samsara’s cultural principles, including customer success, long-term thinking, inclusivity, and teamwork, as the company scales globally
- Mentor and guide junior ML engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation
