About The Role
The Principal Systems Security Engineer role at Rolls-Royce offers an exciting opportunity to lead and influence the security architecture of cyber-physical embedded systems within defense programs. Based in Indianapolis, IN with a hybrid work schedule, this position involves working closely with cross-disciplinary teams to develop and implement robust security measures for critical defense products. The successful candidate will act as a technical leader, guiding the design and integration of secure systems throughout the product lifecycle—from requirements gathering and architecture development to testing, deployment, and operational support. This role emphasizes collaboration with government agencies, industry partners, and internal teams to ensure compliance with security standards and best practices. It provides a platform to contribute to flagship programs, tackle complex technological challenges, and advance the field of systems security engineering.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in STEM discipline (Electrical, Software, Controls, Systems) with 5+ years of relevant experience, or
- Master’s degree in STEM discipline with 3+ years of relevant experience, or
- JD/PhD in a related field.
- U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain and maintain a high-level security clearance.
- 8+ years of experience in engineering environments related to electrical, software, controls, or systems.
- Strong understanding of embedded systems and cyber-physical system development.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity principles, threats, and mitigation strategies.
- Familiarity with security standards such as RMF, NIST SP 800-160, DO-326, and DoDI 5000.83.
- Excellent systems thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to influence and educate stakeholders.
- Leadership qualities with a desire to mentor and develop team members.
- Collaborate with product security engineering and LibertyWorks teams to define security technologies and develop resilient system architectures.
- Serve as a technical specialist in secure cyber-resilient engineering, providing guidance throughout the product lifecycle.
- Manage small teams or projects, offering technical leadership and expertise.
- Engage with government, industry, and supplier partners across various classification levels to meet security and program requirements.
- Create digital models and utilize model-based systems engineering (MBSE) tools to align with program expectations.
- Develop, update, and disseminate best practices, policies, and procedures related to systems security and resilience.
- Stay abreast of emerging threats and incorporate innovative security solutions into system designs.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in security engineering processes and practices.
