We’re engaged by a product-led tech company undergoing a major architectural transformation. After years of rapid growth and feature velocity, the engineering organisation is now modernising its platform to improve scalability, reliability and long-term adaptability.
They are moving from a Ruby monolith toward a modern, service-based ecosystem built in Java, Python and Rust - and they need a senior technical leader to own complex extraction work and guide the transition.
What You’ll Be Doing as a Staff Full Stack Engineer, Java Focused | Some Python, Ruby on Rails, Rust, React is a plus | Remote UK or EU | £500-600/day Outside IR35 | 12-Month Contract
- Leading feature-by-feature migration out of a legacy Rails monolith
- Designing and delivering new microservices in Java and/or Python (Rust experience a bonus)
- Working with product and engineering teams to map dependencies and define extraction strategy
- Driving delivery end-to-end: design, build, refactor, test, deploy
- Ensuring robust automated testing, integration and e2e coverage (including mobile touchpoints)
- Creating documentation for API specs, architecture, deployment flows and service interactions
- Improving system performance, reliability and observability as services scale
- Helping standardise engineering processes across multiple teams

- Advanced commercial experience with Java
- Strong experience with Python or Rust
- Background working with Ruby on Rails in production systems
- Modern frontend experience - React ideally
- REST or GraphQL API experience
- Experience with MySQL/Redis and distributed architecture
- Comfortable leveraging AI/coding agents to accelerate delivery
- Strong communication and technical leadership abilities
- Able to operate independently, or lead small teams to deliver complex work
