Consumers Energy is Michigan’s largest energy provider, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Location: This is a hybrid (virtual/onsite) position with required onsite days on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday assigned to One Energy Plaza located in Jackson, MI.  The selected candidate must be within a commutable distance or willing to relocate (relocation package is available for those that qualify).

General Summary Of Job Responsibilities

The Associate Cloud Engineer is an early-career technologist responsible for supporting the design, deployment, and maintenance of cloud infrastructure across CMS Energy’s cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) and on-premises environments. This role emphasizes hands-on learning, skill development, and collaborative delivery of basic cloud infrastructure tasks under the supervision of more senior team members.

The Associate Cloud Engineer works closely with engineering, operations, and security teams to assist in building, configuring, monitoring, and maintaining environments used to run business-critical applications.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist in provisioning cloud infrastructure resources (e.g., VMs, storage, networking components) using Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or Bicep.
  • Support the configuration and monitoring of cloud environments, responding to alerts or issues under supervision.
  • Contribute to basic CI/CD pipelines and deployment scripts in collaboration with DevOps engineers.
  • Participate in patch management, system backups, and basic maintenance tasks on Linux- and Windows-based systems.
  • Document system configurations, procedures, and known issues to improve operational knowledge sharing.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting of cloud environments, escalating issues as needed.
  • Learn and follow team best practices for code quality, automation, security, and change control.
  • Participate in team sprints and planning activities to understand the priorities and workflows of the Cloud Engineering team.
  • Seek mentorship, training, and feedback to accelerate technical and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Basic understanding of cloud services and concepts, particularly Azure, with familiarity with AWS/GCP as a plus.
  • Foundational knowledge of Linux/Windows operating systems and basic networking (e.g., DNS, firewalls, subnets).
  • Exposure to Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Bicep, or ARM templates.
  • Introductory scripting skills (PowerShell, Python, or Bash preferred).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD concepts and tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins (exposure only; guided usage expected).
  • Strong communication skills, curiosity, and a willingness to ask questions and learn from others.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • (OR) Associate’s degree with two (2) or more years of relevant experience, including internships, co-op programs, or technical coursework/projects related to cloud or systems engineering.
  • (OR) High School Diploma/GED with four (4) or more years of relevant experience, including internships, co-op programs, or technical coursework/projects related to cloud or systems engineering.
