Senior Data Scientist

Your mission

You are an experienced, hands-on Data Scientist who enjoys working broadly across the entire data journey, from understanding real customer problems and messy sensor data to deploying scalable solutions in production. You are comfortable switching between analysis, modelling, engineering, and collaboration, depending on the actual needs.

At TALPA, you will work on real-world challenges such as anomaly detection, predictive and preventive maintenance, machine activity recognition, and root-cause analysis for heavy and construction machinery. You will collaborate closely with other Data Scientists, ML Engineers, MLOps Engineers, and domain experts to build solutions that are not only technically strong but also create measurable value for our customers.

This is a role for people who want to build, ship and improve - not just prototype models. You will have ownership, autonomy, and responsibility, and you will see your work running on thousands of machines in the field.

Key Responsibilities:

• Take ownership of data science projects end to end: from problem framing and data exploration to modeling, deployment, and iteration in production together with our ML and ML Ops Engineers.
• Design, develop, and deploy algorithms that turn raw machine data into actionable insights, including predictive maintenance, anomaly detection, and machine activity detection.
• Work with noisy, unlabelled, and heterogeneous data, applying appropriate techniques across time series, image, and text data when relevant.
• Collaborate closely within the Data Science team and across disciplines, openly discussing assumptions, trade-offs, and results to reach the best solutions together.
• Engage regularly with engineers, domain experts, and customers, translating real-world needs into scalable data-driven solutions.
• Contribute to production-quality codebases and infrastructure, applying solid software engineering and quality practices throughout the stack.
  
  

Your profile

• At least 3 years of experience (past Master’s degree) developing and deploying ML models to solve real-world problems in either industrial, commercial or academic settings.
• A solid theoretical understanding of machine learning algorithms and the statistical principles behind them.

• Experience with multi-variate and multi-scale time series sensor data.
• Proven experience in handling all phases of ML model creation: from gathering requirements and processing raw data through to model development, deployment, and validation.
• Proven experience building deep learning models with TensorFlow or PyTorch.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to explain complex technical problems to non-technical audiences.
• Self-motivated learner with the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary, diverse environment.
• Willingness to work from the office in Essen Rüttenscheid once or twice per week (hybrid).
  
  

Nice to have:

• Experience with RAG systems, AI agents, large language models (ChatGPT, Llama, Claude, Gemini, DeepSeek), HuggingFace, and LangChain.
• Published research papers, particularly in machine learning or artificial intelligence.
• Visible record of contributing to OS projects or personal projects on git.
