J MAR’s client, an oil and gas company specializing in mineral rights and royalty management, seeks a Senior GIS/Data Analyst bridging GIS and data engineering initiatives. This position is responsible for maintaining spatial data, supporting business intelligence efforts, and collaborating closely with land, accounting, and engineering teams to deliver actionable insights that support strategic decision-making.
RESPONSIBILITIES
GIS (Core Function)
- Analyze and review title documents, including oil and gas leases and real property records, to determine geographic locations of ownership.
- Plot complex land descriptions (metes and bounds descriptions, quarter calls, less and excepts, etc.) using ArcGIS software and link spatial data to agreements in land management systems.
- Maintain GIS databases, ensuring accurate and up-to-date parcel information; correct and refine data as needed.
- Work closely with land and engineering teams to determine boundaries of future drill spacing units for company forecasts and mineral acquisition valuation.
- Produce maps displaying ownership parcels with leases and well locations.
- Conduct geospatial analysis in ArcGIS to identify and pursue revenue recovery efforts.
- Support cross-departmental teams by leveraging GIS and data-driven tools to enhance collaboration and visualization.
Data Engineering & Analytics
- Create analytic models and data products to support strategic business decisions.
- Design and implement modern data pipelines and ETL processes to extract and process data in batch and real-time from multiple data sources.
- Steward and enhance existing business intelligence reports, applications, and workflows to optimize data flows and reporting accuracy.
- Help establish and promote best practices around data governance, data security, and privacy.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to help define and support the company’s target data strategy.
- Extract and integrate data from diverse systems, applying strong data modeling and transformation techniques.
- Clearly communicate complex technical concepts and solutions to support informed decision-making across the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Geography, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or Computer Science.
- 5+ years of GIS experience in the oil and gas industry.
- Strong mastery of core GIS concepts, including coordinate systems, transformations, projections, spatial joins, and data pipelines.
- Demonstrated experience in GIS, geospatial analysis, report development, data science, business analytics, and business intelligence.
- Proven proficiency in data modeling, ETL workflows, and transformation techniques to deliver optimized, structured datasets.
- Strong understanding of data governance principles, including master data management and reference data standards.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
RELEVANT SOFTWARE & TECHNICAL SKILLS
- GIS: ArcGIS, ArcPro or equivalent, ArcServer, ArcPy
- Azure: Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse, SQL Database, Data Lake, Functions, Web Apps (App Service)
- Power Platform: Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse
- Programming: Python, SQL
PREFERRED SOFTWARE & TECHNICAL SKILLS
- Advanced ETL/data modeling within Azure
- Advanced Azure capabilities: Data Lake management, Cosmos DB, advanced Functions, Delta Lake, Web App development/deployment
- Advanced Power Platform skills: DAX in Power BI, sophisticated Power Apps design, advanced Power Automate flows
- Additional BI platforms: Spotfire, Tableau
- Oil & gas related: LandWorks/Pandell, Enverus, regulatory datasets (RRC, NDIC, OCC)
