Job Description

WHO WE ARE

FreeFrom – a proudly feminist, national nonprofit led by queer, trans, im/migrant, and BIPOC survivors and allies – is on a bold mission to build economic freedom and safety with survivors of gender-based violence (GVB). With over $5 million in direct cash aid disbursed to 30,000+ survivors nationwide, a savings-matching program that grows emergency reserves up to $1,440 annually, and living-wage jobs created through our social enterprise, GIFTED, unlocked $4 million in federal VAWA funding, FreeFrom is rewriting what safety and security look like. Our advocacy has influenced workplace protections, and advanced financial security legislation impacting 20 million survivors. Through groundbreaking research, storytelling projects like the documentary SURVIVOR MADE, and national campaigns reframing gender-based violence as a journey of resilience and joy, FreeFrom is shifting culture and policy alike.

At this exciting moment in our evolution, we are hiring a VP of Marketing & Communications to harness data, storytelling, and strategy to amplify survivor voices, move resources, and shape the national conversation.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Design, implement, and lead marketing and communications strategies that drive visibility, revenue, and narrative change.

  • Set and steward a cohesive marketing and communications strategy, ensuring all creative outputs and initiatives align with clear, measurable organizational goals.
  • Lead FreeFrom’s strategic narrative and storytelling, shaping how the organization—and the broader field—talk about GBV survivors and ensuring campaigns, content, and partnerships collectively drive culture change and action.
  • Set and uphold a high bar for visual craft and communications assets, inclusive of social content, media pitches, social content, videos, newsletters, reports, speeches, and other assets.
  • Partner closely with the CEO and Development team to ensure marketing and communications strategy directly fuel fundraising, donor engagement, and long-term revenue growth.
  • Build strong infrastructure, inclusive of editorial calendars, brand guidelines, analytics, and reporting systems that ensure campaigns are strategically aligned and visually cohesive.
  • Serve as point person for communications related to flagship initiatives such as the Survivor Wealth Summit, major reports, and national narrative change campaigns.
  • Support the growth and long-term profitability of GIFTED by guiding its storytelling, brand positioning, and audience engagement.

Serve as a senior leader, department head, and champion for FreeFrom’s mission and values.

  • Contribute to strategic decision-making, organizational planning, and development of policies and practices—bringing a story, brand, and culture lens to leadership decisions.
  • Oversee departmental operations, including budget, expenses, revenue alignment, analytics systems, and vendor/consultant management.
  • Mentor and grow a marketing and communications team that reflects clarity of strategy, excellence in storytelling, high visual standards, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Act as a thought partner to the CEO, ensuring her voice is strategically deployed while freeing her from day-to-day communications management.
  • Lead with integrity and fluency in survivor-centered language, power, and nuance, recognizing that learning how this work must be talked about is a core leadership responsibility.

WHO YOU ARE

  • A marketing and communications maven. You craft sharp messages, land press, run campaigns, and build digital momentum that keeps brands visible and consistent. Experience in nonprofit, advocacy, and/or purpose-driven settings is strongly preferred.
  • A strategic thinker and tactical executor. You see the big picture and chart bold paths while rolling up your sleeves to deliver. You blend data, innovation, and creativity to turn ideas into measurable activities.
  • A compelling storyteller. You embrace storytelling as the engine of culture change and systems transformation. You set narrative vision, shape story arcs, and ensure coherence across platforms, campaigns, and partnerships.
  • A fundraising-aligned marketer. You instinctively understand how strategy, narrative, and visuals move donors, build trust, and generate long-term sustainability.
  • A discerning creative leader. You uphold the power of strong design and high standards for visual clarity, cohesion, and impact.
  • A grounded people leader. You give clear, honest feedback, build accountability without defensiveness, and grow high-performing teams rooted in trust, rigor, and care.
  • A disciplined operator. You build the systems that enable creative excellence, manage multiple priorities with precision, and leverage technology to scale impact without chaos.
  • A builder with grit. You bring persistence, adaptability, and resolve to grow strategy, story, and visual leadership at scale.
  • A curious learner who leads without ego. You listen deeply, adapt quickly, and approach new content and perspectives with respect.
