GiGi’s Playhouse is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way the world views Down syndrome and sending a global message of acceptance for all. We provide free educational, therapeutic, and career development programs to individuals with Down syndrome and their families across our nationwide network of Playhouses.
Role Overview
GiGi’s Playhouse is seeking a Volunteer WordPress Developer to support our digital presence and help ensure our website remains functional, accessible, and engaging for the families and communities we serve. This is a meaningful opportunity to use your technical skills to directly support a mission-driven organization making a measurable impact nationwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain custom WordPress themes and plugins using modern development standards
- Architect and support complex WordPress implementations, including multisite and high-traffic environments
- Troubleshoot and resolve advanced issues related to performance, scalability, security, and plugin or theme conflicts
- Optimize page load speed, Core Web Vitals, and overall site performance
- Apply WordPress security best practices, including updates, hardening, and vulnerability mitigation
- Ensure compliance with WCAG accessibility standards and responsive design principles
- Recommend architectural improvements and modernization opportunities across the WordPress ecosystem
Qualifications
- Advanced, hands-on experience as a WordPress Developer in production environments
- Strong proficiency with WordPress core, custom theme development, and custom plugin development
- Expert-level PHP with solid working knowledge of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS
- Experience supporting WordPress multisite, enterprise, or high-availability deployments
- Familiarity with WP-CLI, REST API integrations, and modern WordPress tooling
- Demonstrated experience with performance optimization, caching strategies, and security best practices
- Working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1+) and inclusive design principles
- Experience using Git, structured release processes, and environment-based deployments
- Ability to work independently, manage a small weekly time commitment, and deliver high-quality technical outcomes
- Passion for mission-driven work and applying technical expertise for social impact
Time Commitment & Structure
- Approximately 4–5 hours per week
- Fully remote and flexible scheduling
