United Therapeutics (Nasdaq: UTHR) seeks to travel down the corridors of indifference to develop treatments for rare, deadly diseases. We were founded in 1996 by a family seeking a cure for their daughter's pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Today, we have six FDA-approved therapies that treat PAH, pulmonary hypertension associated with interstitial lung disease (PH-ILD) and neuroblastoma, a rare pediatric cancer. Our near-term pipeline seeks to develop additional therapies for PAH and pulmonary fibrosis (PF).

The cure for end-stage life-threatening diseases like PAH, PH-ILD, PF, and many others is an organ transplant, but only a small percentage of donated organs are available to address the vast need. For this reason, we are working to create manufactured organs to address the shortage of kidneys, hearts, lungs, and livers available for transplant. We believe an unlimited supply of tolerable, transplantable organs will eliminate the transplant waiting list and cure end-stage organ diseases for which transplant is not currently an option.

Who You Are

The selected intern will need to report onsite at the Silver Spring, MD office for the entire duration of the program which runs from May through August 2026. United Therapeutics does not provide housing or transportation. A stipend for relocation assistance may be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Program Details

• All internships are paid, up to 40 hours/week.
• Interns are responsible for arranging their housing and transportation. A relocation stipend may be provided for non-local candidates. Determinations will be made on a case-by-case basis.
• 2026 Internship Program Dates:
• Monday May 18th to Friday August 14th

How You'll Contribute

Here at Lung Bioengineering (a wholly owned subsidiary of United Therapeutics), our mission is to increase the availability and suitability of organs for transplant. Ex-Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP) is a procedure used by transplant teams to evaluate lungs outside the body, providing essential information on lungs that may not initially appear suitable for transplant. Our EVLP Clinical Specialists play a vital role in this process, working closely with transplant surgeons to provide hands-on assessments and detailed data on the condition of the lungs. This crucial information helps surgeons determine the suitability of lungs for transplantation.

In this internship, you'll have opportunities to gain clinical experience supporting our EVLP procedure as well as support data analysis projects and gain insight into the use of Machine Learning to support EVLP efforts.

• Develop, test, and deploy machine learning/artificial intelligence models to predict lung transplant outcomes
• Design dashboards, visualizations, presentations to communicate insights to the clinical team
• Assist in streamlining data collection processes by cleaning, validating, and organizing datasets
• Identify data in the literature and public repositories suitable for training and validating models
• Involvement in EVLP case and facility readiness, data collection and analysis for donor demographics, and EVLP and recipient outcomes.

Minimum Requirements

• Must actively be a college student (including rising sophomores or those pursuing a 2-year degree).
• Must be available to work 40 hours per week onsite in the Silver Spring, MD office
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite
  
  

The salary for this position ranges from $24.50 to $24.50 per hour. The salary range is the range United Therapeutics Corporation in good faith believes is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting depending on the candidate's experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law. The Company may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This range may be modified in the future.
