About The Role

Within Optum Advisory, the Data & Research function plays a critical role in providing analytics capabilities that leverage expertise in data management, analysis, healthcare informatics, and financial assessment. The Data Analyst will be instrumental in translating complex business requirements into technical specifications, conducting detailed data profiling and analysis, and collaborating with data engineering teams to develop and maintain scalable ETL processes. This role involves working with large datasets related to health insurer eligibility, membership, and claims data, ensuring data integrity, quality, and reliability. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong technical aptitude, analytical skills, and the ability to communicate findings effectively to diverse audiences. Flexibility to work remotely from anywhere within the U.S. is a key benefit of this role, offering a dynamic environment to tackle challenging projects and contribute to healthcare improvements.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience analyzing health insurer's Medical Eligibility/Membership and Medical Claims data
  • 4+ years of Business Analyst experience, including requirement gathering and writing data functional specifications
  • 4+ years of experience with database technologies such as Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, Teradata, or Snowflake
  • Proficiency in writing adhoc SQL queries against large data warehouses from multiple sources
  • Intermediate or higher proficiency in SQL, including SELECT statements, filtering, joining tables, aggregating, and nesting
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and functions like VLOOKUP, SUM, CONCATENATE
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently, conduct data profiling, and present findings clearly
  • Experience collaborating with data engineers, actuarial staff, and project managers
  • Demonstrated ability to perform data and code reviews to ensure accuracy and reliability

Responsibilities

  • Define, gather, and review data requirements for health insurer databases, including eligibility, membership, and claims data
  • Perform data profiling and analysis to assess source data quality and usability for business needs
  • Translate business requirements into detailed, actionable data specifications and documentation
  • Collaborate with data engineers to develop, optimize, and update ETL processes for data extraction, transformation, and loading
  • Design and execute quality assurance checks to validate data accuracy and process performance
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation such as functional specifications, data flow diagrams, and data dictionaries
  • Investigate root causes of data issues, recommend, and implement effective solutions
  • Work with data engineering teams to ensure the reliability and scalability of high-volume data processes
  • Develop insights and analyses to communicate changes or updates to production data processes to stakeholders
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance data quality, process efficiency, and reporting capabilities
